Are Catholics against sociology?
Huh? I was a Sociology major at my Catholic college. Hopefully this doesn’t mean I’m excommunicated. What is it about Sociology - the study of people in groups - that would make you think that? Are Catholics against sociology?
This was probably an old hold out from the dominant sociological position of the 1920’s and 30’s. Then, these scientists had a knack for trying to explain everything, including religious belief, with a purely sociological framework. No contradiction, no conflict. Sociology can be of interest to the Church in looking back and examining the consequences of post-Vatican II reform, for example.
When somebody talks about what should be done with certain situations,There are, unfortunately, liberal trends (cultural relativism being one) in many schools of sociology. These are incompatible with Catholic belief.
