Sola Fide or Biblical contradiction?

I just ran into a little snag with a protestant brother. in the bible paul says we are justified by faith aside from works of the law but it later says in james that we are not justified by faith alone.
now he states that “the law” refferd to is the jewish law or the moral code and works of the law would be defined good works if done so properly so was paul saying we are saved by faith alone???
and was james WRONG in his epistle (i have heard this theory before)
or is this a biblical contradiction?
