I am going to have a discusion with a fundamentalist wensday-ish on the issue of sola scriptora. And I would like some help. Other than the “Traditions of men” scriptures and the scripture in 1st timothy “all scripture is inspired” I don’t know what all they use as support for their dogma and how to defend against it. Does anyone know what they are and how to deal with them? Or where I could go to figure it out? I want to be totally prepared. Thanks and God bless.

Don’t forget this one:

If the Bible is the sole rule of faith, where does it state that in the Bible?

It’s not there… so the whole idea is completely self-refuting.

Let’s also not forget that the Bible was not around for the early church. What was the sole rule of faith BEFORE the Bible came into existence as we know it today? How did the early Christians know what to believe or how to worship etc, when they didn’t HAVE a Bible? (This supports the concept of Tradition, doesn’t it?)

May God open their hearts to understand the truth… my prayers are with you.

Sola scriptura cannot be practiced. I’ll repost this post I posted before on another board:

There are those who say they hold to sola scriptura - the scriptures alone are their only authority. But what I see they do is practice something else.

They’ll make claims like “that’s not biblical” “your interpretation is wrong” and things like that, making a judgment, which is really just them exercising their own PERSONAL MAGISTERIAL AUTHORITY.

Then they’ll interpret scripture, and that interpretation is nowhere in the pages of scripture, so that turns out to be an extra-scriptural TRADITION.

So what happens here is the sola scripturist is really holding to a theological tripod: Scripture, Tradition (their interpretation of Scripture) and Magisterium (their personal magisterial authority)

We Catholics admit we hold to a theological tripod of authority, but sola scripturists refuse to do so.

Thus, since sola scripturists are holding to a theological tripod, this means that 1) they are hypocrites or 2) sola scriptura cannot be practiced.

I’ll give the sola scripturists the benefit of the doubt and eliminate 1) from consideration as a conclusion.

Thus, the only remaining logical conclusion is that sola scriptura cannot be practiced.

So here we have sola scripturists claiming that God commands them to practice a doctrine they cannot practice. Sounds like a cruel eternal joke instead of a merciful God to me. I don’t buy it.

Then there’s another objection: There is no firm definition of what sola scriptura means, that all sola scripturists claim is true.

Some say “Bible Alone”
Some say “Bible is #1 but other authorities may be used”
Some say “Bible ONLY! Anything outside of the Bible is tradition of men!”
Some say “Bible, tradition and magisterium, but Bible is the only infallible authority” (this is known as prima scriptura and not sola scriptura.

The relativism of sola scriptura prevents such a definition to take hold.

If you are going to discuss “Sola Scriptura” - make absolutely sure that you know what the other person means by it. The importance of making sure that one knows what people mean by the words they use is hard to exaggerate - it’s vital to ensure that you are both using words in the same way, otherwise, you will merely end up talking past one another; or, even worse, caricaturing each other’s beliefs. And that does no one any good.

It is also a good idea to try to understand the other person’s way of thinking.

*If *the other person is a Calvinist, this page has a lot on Sola Scriptura; you may find something helpful: http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/topic/fivesolas.html

From the page:

THESIS ONE: SOLA SCRIPTURA

We reaffirm the inerrant Scripture to be the sole source of written divine revelation, which alone can bind the conscience. The Bible alone teaches all that is necessary for our salvation from sin and is the standard by which all Christian behavior must be measured.

We deny that any creed, council or individual may bind a Christian’s conscience, that the Holy Spirit speaks independently of or contrary to what is set forth in the Bible, or that personal spiritual experience can ever be a vehicle of revelation.

From The Cambridge Declaration of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals

“Do Not Go Beyond What Is Written” 1 Cor 4:6
“Do Not Add To or Take Away” Rev 22:18-19
“All Tradition is EEEEEEVIL” Matt 15:1-9
“All Scripture is AWWWWWESOME” 2 Tim 3:15-17
“Scripture is enough for instruction” Romans 15:4
“the Faith was once delivered to the saints” Jude 3
“Jesus Quotes Scripture” Matt 4
“Paul Quotes Scripture” Romans 4
“Scripture Quotes Scripture” 2 Peter 3:16; 1 Timothy 5:18 quotes Luke (or Matthew)

So there! Sola Scriptura proved!

I concur with Michael here.

“Sola Scriptura” is just a title that may or may not accurately represent the belief system of the person you are talking to.

You don’t know how many times I have read both Catholics and Protestants misrepresent and caricaturize each other based on a title.

I have never heard the title “Sola Scriptura” in my church for example. How could I argue for something that is not even used in my church?

Ask them where in the Bible it says you can only use the Bible.

There is more, much more-- but you need to be more specific as to your audience that would help.

You haven’t proven anything.
Sola Scriptura is Latin for Scripture Alone
Where’s the quote from the bible that says “Scripture alone is your sole source of faith”?

My bible says 2 Thessalonians 2:15:
“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter”

PhilVaz is Catholic, folks.

I don’t think he was intending to try to prove Sola Scriptora but rather to give some verses that may be thrown into the discussion.

My suggestion for the OP is to ask your friend how Sola Scritora works (whatever his/her definition of it might be). What I mean is, functionally, how does it lead a person to determine what to believe? I have never had a satisfactory answer to this question.

No need to debate Bible verses, in my opinion. If Sola Scriptora works…that is, if it is sufficient to lead a person to the truth of Jesus Christ, surely it can be explained how exactly it leads a person to truth, right?

I mean, if you and your friend by chance disagree on the interpretation of a particular verse, surely your friend can describe how to apply the concept of Sola Scriptora so as to resolve the disagreement, and thereby determine which interpretation is correct…right?

In fact if Sola Scriptora works, there really shouldn’t be any disagreement among Christians of good will…right?

Fact is, it doesn’t work. People who utilize it arrive at all the certainty of opinion. And the best way to demonstrate that, in my experience, is to challenge the adherents of the concept of Sola Scriptora to explain the real life application of it.

Still, the best advice I can give you is to pray earnestly between now and then, that God will help you say what your friend needs to hear and keep you from saying anything that will drive your friend away from the Church.

Peace,

Sola Scriptura is very funny!

Without the Church to interpret Scripture properly we may distort it to “our own destruction” because certain parts are difficult to understand [2 Pet 3:16-17 ].

Sola Scriptura = over 10,000 different protestant ‘denominations’ especially the ever so popular ‘non-denominational’ denomination.

Sola scriptura can be kind of cool though… You see with Sola Scriptura, whenever you disagree with your pastor, you get to leave and start your own church!!!

Why do I believe in the Magisterium of the Catholic Church?? . . .

Because it makes sense

Ask your protestant friend when they celebrate Christmas.

Then ask where in the Bible did they get that date from.

Ask your protestant friend how he/she can be assured that all teaching they accept and nothing more is from the Bible alone…

They may hesitate to answer, but listen to the response -

Then use it to nail it down later…

Ask your protestant friend if they have rejected anything that was taught in the Bible…

Then ask them if they think that Jesus made a mistake when he set up a Church structure.

Ask them to show you how they can claim they are in that Church.

I forgot to add that the fact is there really is no way some protestant translations of Matthew 6:13 can be tolerated –

The erroneous addition to the Lords prayer "for yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Ask them about that one. If it applies to them. Sounds like they make things up as they go along in regard to that example.

Holy Scripture does not include a list of canon of Holy Scripture. They are painfully unaware of this obvious fact.

2 Timothy 2:2 is a good one as well.

“The things which you have heard from me through many witnesses you must hand on to trustworthy men who will be able to teach others”

That one is great. Ask him who these trustworthy men are. That ought to get him/her thinking.

With regard to II Tim 3:15-17, the “all Scripture is this, that, or the other” passage, if he brings it up, ask him if all dogs have four legs = only dogs have four legs. If “all dogs have four legs” =/ “only dogs have four legs,” then “all Scripture is…” =/ “only Scripture is…”

I didn’t see this in the list anywhere. It’s pretty much the final word on SS: geocities.com/militantis/solascriptura.html

I once went ten pages with a bunch of Protestants on SS, and none of them would even attempt to refute the first two questions in this list. They tried to slam the Church on everything under the sun, but nobody would attempt anything but the most feeble arguments against it. After ten pages, I abondoned the thread.

I gave up on Protestant make it up as you go thought when it hit me—

its lack of maturity. It is in a nutshell, the defiance of any real authourity-

You cant tell me what to do mentality that turned me off. That was how Luther appeared to me after some thought on his life.

The list becomes long on “what we do not accept” and the list of what they do seems to shrink away to the bare minimum.

It takes maturity to realize that real authourity is not going to be all YOU want it to be. In fact, that is why one can see how entertainment in many protestant denominations is what it becomes all about.
