I am told by sola scriptura advocates that ALL authorities outside the holy bible are subordinate to, and are to be corrected by, the written word of God alone, and that the holy bible is the Christians final authority, and that the bible contains the only knowledge necessary for one’s salvation. From that I am assuming that ALL authorities outside the holy bible who are subordinate to, and are corrected by, the written word of God, which again is the SS advocates final authority, can rightfully form beliefs as they are moved by the Holy spirit.

With that said, specifically, how can a SS advocate know, with certainty, which SS advocate is teaching something that is in accordance with Scripture as opposed to contradicting it, and which SS advocate is teaching something that is NOT in accordance with Scripture?

Alas. My SS friends will tell you that the Holy Spirit guides you to the proper conclusion.

(From 2 Timothy 3 ESV)
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom [1] you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God [2] may be competent, equipped for every good work.
An ‘SS Advocate’ (which you charitably have called us) would say that no ‘teacher’ of Scripture is superior to Scripture itself, and, as a previous poster has expressed, the Holy Spirit does guide one to a proper understanding of it.

Why would God ‘breathe out’ something that wasn’t right?

The better question… If sola scriptura is correct what books are to be considered “the word of God”. Oddly enough scripture is silent on this issue.

Besides. Scripture is riddled with contradiction. That in itself destroys the false teaching of sola scriptura.

Just read the Old testament on Divorce and then the Gospel on Divorce. If you can make those fit you have the broken mind of a Pagan Literature worshipper.

The Scripture also calls Jesus the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Do you take issue with that?

You would probably agree that Paul was one of the best preachers ever.

Acts17
10And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

When he went into Berea to preach to the Bereans they recieved him with “all readiness of mind” but “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” So when you ask “how can a SS advocate know, with certainty, which SS advocate is teaching something that is in accordance with Scripture as opposed to contradicting it” of coarse we need to “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

I was really kind of hoping we could stay focused on the OP. I am really searching for viable answers regarding the OP…

That’s not the realm of sola scriptura, which is, the practice of holding teachers and teachings accountable. Hermeneutics is a responsibility of the Church, and the Church decides, based on what it believes is inspired, what is scripture. In a similar way, the
Supreme Court holds accountable the executive and legistative branches of government to the constitution. It ignores (or at least is supposed to)other governmental documents and bodies.

Different communions, be they east or west, Catholic, Orthodox, or non-Catholic have different canons of scripture. Aparrently, even those who rely on scripture and Tradition cannot agree on the canon.
Besides. Scripture is riddled with contradiction. That in itself destroys the false teaching of sola scriptura.
Only when scripture is read piecemeal, and not as a whole document

So, what are the intentions of the old and new testaments? Are you of the position that the old and new covenants are in contradiction? Finally, it is patent polemics, or pure ignorance of sola scriptura, to believe that it is the worship of a book.

Hey Richard…

I agree; searching the scriptures is great, however, how can a SS advocate know, with certainty, which SS advocate, (when their done searching the scriptures, just as the Bereans did) - is teaching something that is in accordance with Scripture as opposed to contradicting it, and which SS advocate is teaching something that is NOT in accordance with Scripture?

Specifically, Joe, since sola scriptura is a practice upon which the Church performs its role of hermeneutics, we look to the Church to make that determination. Lutherans, for example, look to the Creeds, the Lutheran Confessions, and the early councils with faith that they are right reflections of the truth of scripture. In the same way, Catholics look to the Magisterium with **faith **that it is correct.

The authority of the church, regardless of denomination? That makes perfect sense Jon, 👍 - and I have always agreed with you on that, but that answer is not the typical Sola scriptura answer. If it were, I would not have started this thread. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut brother. 🙂

The scriptures that they had at the time was the Old Testament…not all of the New Testament had been written or put into its 27 Book form. They were in all likelyhood searching the OT for the prophecies of Jesus and checking them with what Paul had said.

I’m not quite sure I understand your question. If a SS advocate, as you put it, was teaching according to scripture as opposed to contradicting it, you would know that by seaching the scriptures.

Exactly, Jn.5
39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

If I were a Sola scriptura advocate “searching the scriptures” - how could I know, with certainty, which sola scriptura advocate ( all of which are also “searching the scriptures” as well) - is in fact teaching something that is in accordance with Scripture and which SS advocate is teaching something that is NOT in accordance with Scripture?

You would know that by studying and seaching the scriptures.

While you’re “searching the scriptures,” hunt down where the phrase “scripture only” or SOLA SCRIPTURA appears in the Holy Writ.

If the Holy Spirit guides everyone to a “proper” understanding why are there so many denominations all with different “proper” understandings?
