And Pope Benedict’s immediate 2 or 3 predecessors were some of the hardest workers in His fields. I share your thoughts that we are 500 years out. Luther and Pope Leo X do not control our paths today, we do. If our paths join it will be because we have allowed the Holy Spirit to work our hearts in that way.
There have been dramatic moves since Vatican II to improve our relationship and move us toward unity. Much more can and must be done. I am no expert, but I wonder what a truly ecumenical council, of east and west, including willing protestants, would be possible and helpful.
And also with you,
Gabriel of 12;
Thanks Jon; As far as East and West, I believe if the East would take the post of Paul, and the west remain at the post of Peter we can see reconciliation, but I might be dreaming? But at least I am seeking and have hope; According to the East, Protestantism is a schism that came out of the West Roman Catholic church. Reconciliation between Roman Catholic church and the Protestants might be a whole other difference in circumstances than from the Eastern Catholic church’s not in full communion with the Pope.
Question? now in our day and time, that Protestantism have many splinter independent christian communities, how can these be reconciled back to Protestantism? Then back to Catholicism or have I gone off the ledge here?
I understand your point of “Sola Scriptura”, but these many independent Christian communities have taken “Sola Scriptura” to another level, making themselves “Popes” of their Christian communities, independent not only of Protestantism but Catholicism also, not to mention that some even go as far as making date predictions of the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Maybe the authority issue needs to be settled among all Christians. If the Pope were to bring protestantism back into full communion with Catholics by settling the “Authority” issue for all to be content. You may still find others who will protest this reunification. So then “liberty” comes into question. When it should never be a question of authority, being that all of Christendom only has One KING, One LORD JESUS CHRIST. So democracy does not overrule the Kingdom of God.
Thanks for letting me vent a thought Jon; Peace be with you
