Yes that is very possible. However, would the correct and Jesus-directed Church have failed (ceased to exist) if they didn’t compile a book?
I don’t see your point, the Holy Spirit inspired putting the Bible together so that the Church wouldn’t fail.

I think the Bible was composed to combat the corruption of the Church. It is the written record of apostiolic teaching that we can always come back and check ourselves against.
you keep saying that. who are we? who made you the enterpreter of the SS?

Binding and Loosing doesn’t say that you can make up doctirne.
its not making up doctrine…but Christ makes it pretty clear that whatever Peter binds on Earth is bound in Heaven. so you need to show me where in scripture where Christ says differently. I am sure you have no problem with the Trinity yet their is no mention of it in scripture…you have no issue with the 27 books of the NT yet there are no “inspired” table of contents. You as your posts have shown believe that the Holy Spirit guided the Church to these conclusions…why then can the Holy Spirit not guide the Church in the other doctrines of the Faith?

or maybe I should put it this way, you believe that God Guided the process of putting the Bible together. Do you believe he did it for no reason?

I think you are right with what you said earlier about there were many false letters/gospels out there that were leading the faithful away so the Church had to “reel” them back in by putting together the scriptures…then in the 1500’s when Luther removed the 7 from the OT called the epistle of James an epistle of straw etc… the Council of Trent again had to redefine the scriptures and what belonged so as to keep the faithful to what has always been.

I recently saw a book for sale. In this book a “minister” claimed to prove, through scripture, that adultery, fornication and homosexuality were not only OK by God but actually encouraged. The book cover claimed that he had scripture references for everything.
While I have never seen anything quite as extreme as that, not that I am doubting a single word that you have said, as I have seen some very extreme things… I can quite frankly say that “therein lies the danger of ‘personal interpretation’” which is expressly spoken against or prohibited in the Bible.
This is an extreme example, but for those out there that think an individual has the authority to interpret scripture without the aid of 2000 years of Tradition (great saints and great minds throughout the ages), they may want to examine their motivation. It may be a reluctance to accept the authority of another. It may be pride, it may be ignorance. I don’t know, but I do know that Sola Scriptura doesn’t exist. The Catholic Church was given the job from Christ Himself to be the sole interpreter and arbitrator. “what you bind on earth is bound in heaven.”
Yes, while it is extreme…the example, it is a perfect example to support the reproof for the necessity of a viable and tangible final authority where Holy Scriptures are concerned. Personally I feel that "anyone who claims, without proper authority, to interpret Holy Scriptures to another…is potentially guilty of violating the admonition against “personal interpretation”, potentially a false teacher as warned against in the Bible, and potentially guilty of the sin of pride, and arrogantly so.

Sola Scriptura is nothing more than a weakly contrived smoke screen to attempt to justify heretical beliefs and cloak them in normalcy. An oxymoron if there ever was one…

Peace!

Why would the Holy Spirit guide the Church to ADD to the faith handed down by the apostles? that is almost like saying the faith was not complete as it was handed down

I believe the ECF choose on their own power (God’s command of binding/loosing) to compile a bible. They thought this would be a smart idea. They were inspired by the Holy Spirit while they did this because they this type of act was designated by God to be infallible.

The CC also has the free will to build church where it believe to be necessary.

Now with this question, you can agree with my conclusion, which would be correct, or you can disagree, as a result you declare the Holy Bible is not inspired, thus proving sola scriptura is inncorrect.

Let me restate my original question, and fellow Catholics, if this doesn’t make sense to you either, let me know.

Was the bible the deciding factor in the church’s survival when it was being compiled? If they did not compile a bible, would the Church have ceased to exist?

how do we know it was added? dont you believe in oral tradition as mentioned in scripture? these things were always believed and only needed to be defined when being questioned.

I agree, but I think it is more of a way for non-Catholics to not feel guilty about not being Catholic!

The CHURCH is the Pillar and Foundation of TRUTH…so says scripture…so it sounds like the Church would not have ceased to exist…oh yeah and Jesus also said…the gates of hell would not prevail against the CHURCH

I have never thought of this but it popped into my head…

If protestants believe in sola scriptura, and do not believe in tradition or teachings of “other men”, then why do they have a service with a pastor and a sermon? Wouldn’t that directly contradict “not listening to the acts/words of other men”? Shouldn’t they just have big buildings with hundreds of KJV bibles and everyone come in and sing and read the bible? Why discuss amoung each other the meanings behind the scripture verses if it is a personal revelation? Why evangelize to others when each person has their own interpretation? In this scenario, should they even have a weekly service? What is the point of the weekly service (other than raising money for the pastor…i mean church…oh wait the church doesn’t matter, its the principles, so I don’t know where the money is going 🤷 )? They could still keep holy the Sabbath by reading their bibles at home.

Hmmm…
Those are good questions.

I have a question for you:

Are you capable of ANSWERING a question without asking a question?

Please take note that “that is an easy game to play”.😃

Personally, I believe that the Catholic Church’s Councils to determine the Canon of the Bible contributed greatly to the survival of the Church. It would have survived even without the Canon…because Christ Himself deemed it so. However, I further believe that had not the Canon been established…there would be Bibles being published that would be nothing at all like our Bible and apostasy and heresy would be so rampant as to make what occurs today to seem to be “child’s play”.

That is my humble opinion…🙂

Excellent answer! I am just waiting to see if JTBT has a similar or identical one.

Binding and Loosing doesn’t say that you can make up doctirne.
Are you sure about that? What gives you the authority to make that declaration? You?

Seems you have declared yourself an un-reproachable authority!

Yes or no?

Answer, please:D

JTBT I am curious where in scripture does it say Sola Scriptura?
