Sola Scriptura family problem

I would ask them “please quote the bible verse that says to use ‘no book but the bible’”.

there is no such verse. However, for the protestant bases its belief on the very nature of the scriptures themselves i.e. inspired-inerrant Word of God. No church traditions or man for example can rise to this level of authority

And another, “where does the bible say all christian doctrine and practice must be supported or found in the bible?”

If a doctrine is not dervived from the scripture, then on what authority are you basing it on? If not on the Bible, then all you are left with are the mere opinions of men

Another question for them, maybe at another time, would be how do they know the bible is inspired since there is no inspired index of the books of the bible.

The truth of the matter is the first two above are man-made traditions which contradict God’s holy Word as found in the gospel as preached by the apostles and passed on by their successor bishops. 1520 marks the beginning of the currrent sola scriptura & sola fide movement which has had the effect of splintering Christianity into literally thousands of man-made denominations.

Without fully realizing it, more than likely, your family is not really using the authority of the bible but the authority of their preacher or pastor who is teaching them to follow a tradition of men which says to use the bible alone.

The catholic church is in the same boat. They to follow the traditions of their own leaders. What the catholic church has done is to add to the scripture its own traditions and practices which in many cases is not found in the scriptures

And finally, you can point out that in order to be saved we must hear the gospel as preached by the apostles who learned directly from Jesus. If we believe this gospel and are baptized we will be saved. If we reject it we will be condemned (Mt 16:15-16). These are the words of Jesus himself. If we say we have faith in Jesus we must believe everything he says, not pick & choose.

Good point about baptism. However, what do you do with your church that teaches infant baptism in which an infant cannot believe? this contradicts the scripture.

Then ask your family what book, chapter & verses of the bible claim to be a summary of this gospel preached by the apostles which we must believe in order to be saved. Answer: there are no bible verses claiming to summarize this gospel.

not so. Look at Romans 10:8-10 which says;
8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;
10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

Therefore the ONLY way to know this gospel is by listening to the Church Jesus founded, “the pillar and bulwark of truth” (1Tim 3:15).
Do you believe that protestant churches are capable of preaching the gospel without the help of the catholic church?

Secondly a person can read particular passages of scripture and come to an understanding that they need to repent and believe that Christ died for their sins and rose again.

The creed, the sacraments, commandments and prayer are what the apostles preached and taught. Their successor bishops under the leadership of the popes have transmitted this gospel from generation to generation for 2,000 years. These four “pillars” of the gospel can be found in the Catholic Church’s Roman Catechism (1566) and the new Cathechism (1993).

That is the purpose of catechisms, to teach doctrine. The bible was not written to teach doctrine, it is a narrative of salvation history, i.e., how God has intervened in history to save man.
If what you say is true, then why did Peter in I Peter 2:1-3 say that the way to grow in respect to salvation was directly tied to the scripture itself and not doctrine? Or take 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 which makes a similar claim?

Which is why the founders of modern day Protestantism immediately contradicted themselves when they said “the bible alone & faith alone”, and then turned around and wrote catechisms to teach their new man-made religions.

do you the context in which this was spoken and taught? Luther was not out to destroy the catholic church but wanted it to reform itself by rejecting many of its unbiblical doctrines and practices and return to what Jesus and the apostles intended for the church to be

You say above:

You do realize your scriptures arose from our traditions, hmmm?

And you say:
“The catholic church is in the same boat. They to follow the traditions of their own leaders. What the catholic church has done is to add to the scripture its own traditions and practices which in many cases is not found in the scriptures”

That may be because our traditions came before the Scriptures, other than the OT.

And you say:
“If a doctrine is not dervived from the scripture, then on what authority are you basing it on? If not on the Bible, then all you are left with are the mere opinions of men”

If you are depending on the Bible only, then you are depending on the opinions of men as to what was inspired and what was not.

How would that be a problem?

The problem essentially is on the catholic side of the equation. Since it makes this claim to be the only ones to interpret the scripture correctly (as far as i understand) then is there such a book? If there were such a book, a catholic would then know what a particular verse or passage means. He would have a final and complete understanding of that verse or passage.

Where in the Bible does Jesus command His disciples to write everything down?
He alludes to it in John 14:26.

If He did, they not only disobeyed but memorialized their disobedience at the end of John’s Gospel. John 21:25:
This would not follow from 21:25. John had already finished his gospel at this point. What he is doing is telling his readers that much more could have been written.

1 Timothy 3:13:

You are looking at bible history exactly backwards like most sola scriptura people are prone to do.

You fail to see that you and most Protestants live in a society where people for the most part are literate to a degree and printing any words is quite cheap so the writing comes first and the action comes second.
These days, some guy reads something Billy Graham wrote and off he goes to do it.
Or he makes up a list of New Year’s resolutions on New Year’s Eve and begins doing them the next day.

But at the time of the Scriptures and prior, most people could not read or write. And most did not have enough pigeons on hand to trade a professional scribe to write anything down.
Therefore what happened for the Jews also happened for the Church: The oral word came first, then the tradition of following it, and then it got written down. Therefore everything you do based on the Bible is based on an oral opinion of a man of what is (name removed by moderator)ired by God and then an opinion of men as to which tradition is inspired and then finally, the words and traditions they have already determined to be inspired for hundreds or thousands of years is written down. At great expense so not written down a lot until after the invention of the printing press which gave YOU the luxury of erroneously deciding your paper book came first.

I wouldn’t use the word tradition here but the methods that were used to determine what was inspired and what was not. I believe they got it right. As a protestant Christian, i don’t believe the catholic church got everything wrong. They did get some things right

And you say:
“The catholic church is in the same boat. They to follow the traditions of their own leaders. What the catholic church has done is to add to the scripture its own traditions and practices which in many cases is not found in the scriptures”

I’ve asked this question before about catholic traditions and have not seen an answer yet. Do you happen to know where i can find a list of all or most of the traditions of the catholic church that shows when they began and by whom?

And you say:

That would be true. If you are a catholic, then you must go beyond what i do and depend on others also. You to must depend on men to teach you the truth in some cases without the scriptures

You make some good points here. However, after the oral tradition era passed, we are all left with the written word only. There is no authoriative “oral tradition” today in the church from the apostles.

Can you give me 2-3 catholic traditions that are considered inspired-inerrant at the same level as the scripture?
how about five?
The Real Presence in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
Baptism in Water
Priest as Christ
Apostolic Succession
Peter as Head of the Church

Here are some more-
Mary as Our Mother
Mary Inviolate
Saints Intercessions
Immaculate Conception
Papal Infallibility

Actually, no I don’t. The reason is the fullness of truth is contained within the Church and all Three Keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore I need to depend on nothing else at all. And neither do you.

Correct. Because our written word is based on the original traditions which were based on the original oral traditions from both the Jews and early Fathers. We established that already. Is there a new question in your quote or were you just feeling a need to repeat what was said?

Easy answer for this. Sola Scriptura isn’t described in the bible or implied nor is it taught by Christ or any of the apostles.

Did Jesus and His apostles beleive that the OT scriptures were inspired-inerrant word of God? Yes and that is part of what is invovled with sola scriptura.

Catholic’s aren’t taught what it really means because it has nothing to do with true faith.Making learning about Sola Scriptura meaningless and a waste of time.
Let me encourage you to reconsider this issue. If you believe protestants are wrong about this or any doctrine, don’t catholics have a responsiblity to do the best they can to disuade those who have false beliefs? If so, then understanding sola scriptura and why people believe it would be a great benefit to you in helping others to see the error of it

Only to a point. Simply because it is dangerous to truck with those who persevere in Obstinancy to Sin. That is why the Holy See reserves the right to ex communicate. So that his flock will not be overly tempted and fall.

I have heard of this phrase “fullness of the truth” and i’m not sure what it is. Can you give me a couple of examples what it is?
Is this “fullness of the truth” grounded in the scripture and if so where can i go to check it?

Does your church consider protestants heretics?

No. It is not grounded in Scripture. The Scripture is grounded in the fullness of truth. We already agreed on that when we agreed that our written word was based on the oral tellings and traditions that came before it.

I understand it is difficult when your understanding is based on a backwards concept of history. But try again to figure out how the Bible you hold in your hand came from. It did not fall out of the sky complete into your living room. Or if it did, I hope you have are in good hands with allstate.😃

How about the canon of the New Testament? There is no divinely-inspired table of contents. How about the doctrine that the canon of Scripture is closed? Have you ever considered that a strict adherence to sola scriptura and private judgment would require you to follow the example of the LDS church and entertain the possibility that there are other Scriptures besides the Bible? After all, if you reject the authority of the Catholic Church to be the sole interpreter of Scripture, the next logical step would be to reject her authority to be the sole producer of Scripture.

I’m having a family problem: I don’t believe in sola scriptura. My family accuses me of “hating God’s word” and “not believing in God’s word” and even calling me an athiest! How should I respond to this with charity?
This is all you need.

can you point me to an offical source from the catholic church itself that says to the effect that these are inspired-inerrant traditions at same level as scripture?
For example this is what the scripture says about itself in Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Do these traditions have this power to what the scriptures themselves claim?

No. It is not grounded in Scripture. The Scripture is grounded in the fullness of truth. We already agreed on that when we agreed that our written word was based on the oral tellings and traditions that came before it.
And Scripture does make reference to it, which is worth citing to again:

[sign]…the household of God, which is the church of the living God, **the ****pillar and bulwark of the truth.**1 Timothy 3:13[/sign]
