Sola Scriptura, Homosexuality and WWJD

I was searching for Religions that tolerated Homosexuality and came across this. It dawned on me by reading this that it is Sola Scriptura gone wild. No teaching Church, just me and the Bible and what I say.

The Church (and individual Christians) certainly aren’t immune from making mistakes — horrible ones, at times. In the past, we’ve misused the Holy Scriptures to defend — and even promote — some indefensible beliefs and actions.

There was a time when most Christians believed** slavery **was the will of God. There was a time when most Christians believed women should not be allowed to vote. There was a time when most Christians believed that **interracial marriage **was wrong. Each position was elaborately supported with biblical arguments — and each position, we can now clearly see, was dead wrong.

The notion of using the word “Church” and “individual Christians” begs the question, what Church, which Christians…I believe that this may be a thorn in the side of Sola Scriptura.

Looking at the billboard, I love the ‘affirmation’ is about the centurion’s paralyzed servant. Presumably, this group is saying that servant (which the centurion even says does as he directs) is really his lover? Of course the Bible can say Jesus promotes homosexual relations - as long as we change the words of the Bible…

I once read a letter to the editor by a man who claimed the Bible didn’t prohibit abortion. His reasoning was, “the Bible says that God created man and breathed into him the breath of life. So, if something is not breathing, it is not alive.”

I looked up the passage and then searched the website and for the life of me cannot understand how the message in the poster has anything to do with the message…my mind is in a quandry.

If you look at the arguments then the lover has to be set free from being a slave, since as the argument goes, the Bible was used to promote slavery…and since their is no bond, ie contract, marriage, etc not possible then all we have is a promiscuous relationship that I am sure the Bible would speak poorly of.

And, of course, because there was no slavery, but one man was still doing deeds for another, it was surely because they were intimate. I mean, who has ever heard of a profession where you get paid to do work for someone else, whether it is administrative work, running errands, paying the tax man…

Only God knows, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept his erroneous reasoning. :nope:

The claim which some make about that passage particularly regards the Greek term παις (‘pais’), used for the “servant” in Mt 8:5 and Lk 7:7, the claim specifically being “They used the word pais at a time when that word had definite same sex meaning” (gaychristian101.com/Centurion-And-Pais.html), based upon the fact that παις, ‘boy’, could be used at the time to refer to a boy loved by another male.

The exegetical problem is that παις was frequently used in the period *without *any reference to same-sex relationships, and so the claim that its usage was indicative of such a relationship is one which will only find favour with those who *want *to see it that way.

Yep. Sola Scriptura gone wild can go to one extreme and be used to support gay activists and what they want, or it can go all the way to the other extreme and be used to support Westboro Baptists and their views on homosexuals. Both extremes are wrong.
