FWIW, I don’t think SS is a sustainable position, but I also don’t think the “I didn’t steal your fork” argument is an effective one against it.

Out of curiosity, what arguments do you believe are effective? In the interest of brevity, just the common name should suffice to allow me to search for it (and do my own homework) rather than asking you to type out the entire argument(s).

No argument will suffice with all. The money/fork etc. argument is intended to engender thought in those who have been raised to believe that there is nothing reliable which is not written.

Saint Teresa of Avila wrote, in part: “God alone suffices” Thus, only conviction by the Holy Spirit, whether spiritually or intellectually in some manner, will suffice.

To me, the most compelling are the fact that there wouldn’t be a Scripture without Tradition, the fact that some of the most important doctrines of the Christian faith are not explicitly found in Scripture but were developed and precised by the Church, and of course, 1 Tim 3:15

But as @po18guy says, sometimes (often ?) arguments are not enough.

I really wish sometimes that I had an actual “clue by four” for use in discussions with certain individuals who I will not name, and most of whom are not posters here.

Yep. The point stands though.
The meaning of any sentence can be disputed. With scripture, given how important it is, there has to be an authority that can interpret it for us.

That’s the Church.

It’s probably one of the worst arguments against sola scriptura I’ve ever heard and you do yourself a disservice if you use it. As a point of comparison think of how you feel when people try to use the “call no man Father” argument against the Catholic Church. Its a silly argument, it’s a wonder anyone uses it.

I don’t know about it being one of the worst. It’s an argument against SS only by extension of being an argument against taking verses and phrases out of context. ‘Call no man Father’ is a good example of a phrase that some denominations take out of context.

It may be an unnecessary argument though. A gratuitous one. Maybe even silly. Like using Gilligan’s Island as an argument why people shouldn’t go out to sea on a small boat when there’s a storm coming.

I honestly cannot say how strange I think SS is especially since the KJ bible has books missing from it. So anything that points out it’s flaws, without being insulting, may reach someone and be a worthy argument even if it sounds silly.

I’ve never heard this fork argument before so I don’t think very many people are seriously using it as an argument against SS anyway. There are other , better, arguments that can be made against SS.
