If* Sola Scriptura* is to believed wouldn’t it, by definition, be in Scripture?

I’m not sure scripture is clear about precisely how the Church should practice hermeneutics. I’m guessing that Catholics will have chapter and verse supporting Sacred Tradition and scripture, and western non-Catholics will point to others supporting what ever their practice is, sola scriptura, solo scriptura, etc.

Not everything I believe is necessarily spelled out in scripture. But one thing is for sure, when it comes to the Gospel, it seems a good foundation or norm for the Church to build doctrine on, assuming one believes it is innerrant.

Well, gosh, I should really learn to speak English. :o

The question should read:

If Sola Scriptura is to be believed, wouldn’t it by definition be in Scripture?

Thanks, Jon. Reasonable and rational as always, my friend. Nothing I would disagree with. 🙂

Hello campeador this is the whole point…If* Sola Scriptura* is to believed wouldn’t it, by definition, be in Scripture?

The Scriptures tell you…“All who believe in Scripture ALONE are NOT noble!”
Acts 17:11
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they **received the message with great eagerness ****and **examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

campeador Do you see it?
The Bereans were MORE NOBLE because; they accepted the message of the Church! They ACCEPTED the message with great eagerness!!!

campeador It was the Less Noble…People in Thessalonica that believed in “Scripture ALONE” they refused to listen to the Church!

campeador The People in Thessalonica have an EXCUSE…
When they stand in front of God at judgement they can say: “We did not know were should have Listened to the Church, our Old Testament, does NOT have written ‘LISTEN To The Church’”!

campeador Catholic’s would have no EXCUSE for rejecting Jesus… He tells us in the “New Testament”>>> “Listen To The Church!”
Anyone who rejects the words of Jesus are in fact, rejecting Jesus! Anyone who believes in Scripture Alone now a days is, “NOT NOBLE” they have No Excuse!

campeador So you see… “It is the TEACHING of the Church PLUS the scriptures” that make us noble!
The Bereans, “Listened to the Church without being told to listen!”
They were more noble because their; "Old Testament scriptures, do not have written “Listen to the Church”, as we have in our New Testament!

Not necessarily. For example, the Assumption is not particularly spelled out in scripture at all, and I generally believe it, without getting into the details of “did she die first, or was she assumed alive”. This does not contradict sola scriptura in the least.

And since SS is not a doctrine, I have no doubt that good Christians that do not believe in the practice of sola scriptura, such as Catholics, Orthodox, some Anglicans, are still saved by Grace through faith in Christ.

Hello JonNC I hope all is well…
I reply: Two points…
First: To be a believer you MUST believe the words of Jesus… “the Scriptures”!
The scriptures tell you… “Listen to the CHURCH!” Jesus tells you… “Listen to the Church”!
“Listen to the Church” was in Martin Luther bible as it is still in your bible today! Martin Luther had to REJECT the scriptures to say: “I will NOT listen to the Church, all man needs is the scriptures”!
Martin Luther added the word “ALONE” to the book of Romans… This is an historical documented FACT! Don’t you think if “All man needed was the scriptures” Martin Luther would have handed down a list of scriptures that say this!? He never made a list because, all scripture points to the CHURCH!
“The CHURCH is the Pillar and the foundation of truth” this is scripture, these are the words of Jesus!!!
JonNC It comes down to faith: Do you believe Jesus or Martin Luther!? It is just this simple! Do you place the salvation of your soul on the words of Luther or Jesus! The two are opposed!

Second: Until the sixteen hundreds, it was the Catholic Church that brought Jesus and salvation to the whole world! There were very few bibles, bibles were costly works of art, only the very, very rich could own a bible! Most: 95% of the common people, could not even read! It was the Catholic Church… "Training, correcting, rebuking, and teaching that brought salvation, she used the scriptures!!

JonNC The Catholic Church preached and taught scriptures, the very idea of; “All man needs is scriptures, and each man can interpret for himself what is truth” would be unheard of, it is NOT LOGICAL!
THINK: There are thousands of Protestant churches… ALL claim to have the only truth yet… Not one is the same… no two have arrived at the same truth!
Martin Luther said… “All man needs is the scriptures, even a small child can interpret the scriptures rightly!”
JonNC He was wrong… PROOF? Self interpretation that has divided and fragmented all these man formed protestant churches! They will continue to fragment as long as this belief of; “All man needs is the scriptures to interpret what is truth” continues!
