If by works? How many?.. Gods word CLEARLY states saved by grace, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness(already in righteousness), but according to HIS MERCY, BY THE WASHING OF REGENERATION and RENEWING BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that BEING JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, to that those who HAVE BELIEVED(PAST TENSE) GOD will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men.(TiTUS 3:5-8) HOW MANY WORKS DID THE CRIMINAL THAT DIED ON THE CROSS NEXT TO JESUS DO?, When Jesus promised him he would be with him in paradise today?.. YES WE ARE TO DO GOOD DEEDS, but they are not necessary for salvation, sanctification yes…Why don’t you understand Gods’ word, do you not have the Holy Spirit?.. And AGAIN Romans 3:27-28 " Where then is boasting? It is EXCLUDED. By what kind of law? OF works? NO, BUT BY A LAW OF FAITH!!! FOR WE MAINTAIN THAT A MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY FAITH APART FROM WORKS OF THE LAW!!!

In conclusion… In case you need yet more clarification Talking Salvation Here, not other subjects…Galatians 2:16 nevertheless knowing that a man is NOT JUSTIFIED BY THE WORKS OF THE LAW but THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST, even we have believed Christ Jesus, so that we may be JUSTIFIED by FAITH in CHRIST and not by the works of the law;since by the works of the law, No flesh shall be justified. verse 21 “I DO NOT NULLIFY THE GRACE OF GOD, FOR IF RIGHTEOUSNESS COMES THROUGH THE LAW, THEN CHRIST DIED NEEDLESSLY.”

IT IS FINISHED BELIEVE AND RECEIVE ETERNAL LIFE… JUST BELIEVE and the Holy Spirit will take care of the rest.
First, we are justified by faith by gift of grace, but then we must prove our true faith by performing good works and we must also obey God’s commandments in order to inherit eternal life. Faith without works is dead faith. Dead faith does not save.

James 2:14-26 “What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. 19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble! 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

It is not a one-time shot and then you’re home free. No siree! 😃 (Unless of course, you die immediately after baptism, then you would go directly to heaven.)

1 Peter 4:17-18 "For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now “ If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”

Romans 1:5 “Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name,”

Romans 6:16 “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?”

Hebrews 5:8-9 “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,”

Since Jesus only saves those who obey Him, and since we are all judged according to our works/deeds on Judgment Day, I would say that they are very important; shouldn’t you also?

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Hi Ralph, 🙂

True. However, you forgot to put the next verse:

“10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

We are created for good works and we “must” walk in them if we desire to inherit eternal life. “Should” is not optional; it is a command!

James 2:24 “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

It is important to “get” this very important point. We are judged by our deeds/works on Judgment Day. This is why the Catholic Church insists on good works.

Romans 2:5-8 “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,”

Matthew 16:27 “For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.”

Revelation 20:11-13 “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Matthew 25:31-46 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.
41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’
44 “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

James 2:24 “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

2 Timothy 4:1-4 “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”

A person is justified by Faith Godward and by works manward. People want to see your walk, God is interested in your faith. Not by works it says. Ralph

You do not look at the “whole picture” but instead cling to a couple of verses which “seem” to prove what you believe.

Jesus specifically states that we have to obey His commandments in order to inherit eternal life.

Mark 10:17-23 "Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”
18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’”
20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.”
21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
23 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!”

Luke 10:25-28 "And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?”
27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.”

Jesus states that if you want to inherit eternal life, then you have to obey His commandments, so if you choose to not obey them instead, then you will not inherit eternal life.

Since this teaching is “directly” from Jesus’ own words, then this means that your own interpretations of some of the other Scripture verses are not correct. Scripture, when interpreted correctly, NEVER contradicts Itself. So both faith and works justify us and this is what James states in James 2:24 “You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

In order to continue to be justified after baptism, we must obey God’s commandments and do good works in order to be counted worthy of inheriting eternal life. We must be approved first before we receive our crowns.

Matthew 3:8 “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance,”

2 Thessalonians 1:11 “Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power,”

Philippians 1:27 “Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,”

James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”

Hebrews 5:9 “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,”

If you do not obey the commandments and also produce good fruits (good works/deeds) after your baptism, then you will not inherit eternal life.

It also says, “…not by faith alone.” James 2:24. Read Matthew 25:31-46.

Now what do we do??
I see that you did read the whole chapter in Math 25:31-46, but you did not understand it. First of all He seperated the saved (sheep), from the unsaved (goats). The sheep will go into heaven and were not aware of their works, they said “when did we do these things”. The goats on the other hand were cast into the everlasting fire. Good works are the result of salvation, not the reason. Now you should read all that chapter of James2:14-26 to understand the context. You show your faith by your works, let people see that you have a real LIVE faith by doing the things that God wants you to do. Ralph

Please, Ralph, never presume to tell me what I understand and don’t understand and we’ll be friends, okay. Based on what you write here, I’m certain I understand Scripture far better then you ever did or ever will.

That’s protestant nonsense. You have revised the Gospel to fit your heresy. The text says nothing of the kind. They said ‘When did **we see you **hungry, naked, thirsty and give you food and drink and clothe you?’ They were not aware they served the Lord, not of their works. Stop making things up and, above all, stop changing the words of Scripture. That’ll get you into hell faster than adultry.

More made-up protestant nonsense. And you tell me I don’t understand Scripture?! I’ve read all of James many times. He says if you have faith without works, your faith is dead. And he says, clear as a bell, “…a person is justified by his works, not by faith alone.” You can’t even read and you’re telling me I don’t understand Scripture??

Tell me where the sheep went! Now tell me where the goats went! If the sheep were aware of what they done, then why did God have to tell them, I will tell you: It was because they were doing “what came natural to them” after they were saved, you represent God and carry out His work as he instructed you to do. WORKS will not save you, I hope that you don’t try to get into heaven by your works, I am sure Jesus will say to you; what do you think I died on the cross for, I died to pay the penalty for your sins because there was no way that you could pay for them. He paid for your sins, trust Him to save you, it’s just that simple.

And I am sure you have no idea what Jesus will say to me or to you. Yes, He is our salvation. He died on the cross to redeem the sins of he world. And He said, "Not everyone who calls me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven. And He said believers are those who hear the word of God and keep it. And He said, “Out of my sight, you condemned, into that everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink…I assure you, as often as you neglected to it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to me. These will go off into eternal punishment and the just to eternal life.” Mt. 25:41-42, 45-46. You can twist that any way you want, Ralph, but you can’t change the meaning of it. If you want to reject it, you better be right.

These people are called goats, they went to hell because they were not saved. Ralph

These people are called goats, they went to hell because they were not saved.
Of courses they were not saved. That’s not the question. Why weren’t they saved? Because they didn’t do the works the Lord said they must do for salvation. That’s what Scripture says. It’s right there in black and white and your arguing against it doesn’t change a thing. If it’s what you want to believe, don’t let me stop you. But, as I said, it’s not the kind of thing you want to be wrong about.

Tell me where the sheep went! Now tell me where the goats went! If the sheep were aware of what they done, then why did God have to tell them?
ralphy, don’t you mean ‘if the sheep weren’t aware of WHO they had done that for’, like Ferde was trying to explain to you? I also don’t see where the sheep were unaware of WHAT they were doing. I think they knew perfectly well WHAT, just not TO WHOM. They knew WHAT because they cooperated freely with the Grace of God through faith and obedience, no? They obviously didn’t know TO WHOM because physically, Christ was not there, only spiritually (invisibly). Seems clear to me.

God’s blessings…

so ironic. The people on the left stated they knew what they were doing and who they were doing things for but didn’t since Jesus told them " I never knew you"

Says who?

(and that’s the real question here)
says the Lord Jesus Christ:

Matthew 7:24 "Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock. 26 And everyone who listens to these words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. And it collapsed and was completely ruined."

The conclusion of the discourse (cf Luke 6:47-49). Here the relation is not between saying and doing as in Matthew 7:15-23 but between hearing and doing, and the words of Jesus are applied to every Christian (everyone who listens).

Luke 6:47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, listens to my words, and acts on them. 48 That one is like a person building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when the flood came, the river burst against that house but could not shake it because it had been well built. 49 But the one who listens and does not act is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, it collapsed at once and was completely destroyed."

the real question is how does God speak to us?

Hebrews 1:1 In times past, God spoke in partial and various ways to our ancestors through the prophets; 2 in these last days, he spoke to us through a son, whom he made heir of all things and through whom he created the universe, 3 who is the refulgence of his glory, the very imprint of his being, and who sustains all things by his mighty word. When he had accomplished purification from sins, he took his seat at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 as far superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.

The letter opens with an introduction consisting of a reflection on the climax of God’s revelation to the human race in his Son. The divine communication was initiated and maintained during Old Testament times in fragmentary and varied ways through the prophets (Hebrews 1:1), including Abraham, Moses, and all through whom God spoke. But now in these last days (Hebrews 1:2) the final age, God’s revelation of his saving purpose is achieved through a son, i.e., one who is Son, whose role is redeemer and mediator of creation. He was made heir of all things through his death and exaltation to glory, yet he existed before he appeared as man; through him God created the universe. Hebrews 1:3-4, which may be based upon a liturgical hymn, assimilate the Son to the personified Wisdom of the Old Testament as refulgence of God’s glory and imprint of his being (Hebrews 1:3; cf Wisdom 7:26). These same terms are used of the Logos in Philo. The author now turns from the cosmological role of the preexistent Son to the redemptive work of Jesus: he brought about purification from sins and has been exalted to the right hand of God (see Psalm 110:1). The once-humiliated and crucified Jesus has been declared God’s Son, and this name shows his superiority to the angels. The reason for the author’s insistence on that superiority is, among other things, that in some Jewish traditions angels were mediators of the old covenant (see Acts 7:53; Gal 3:19). Finally, Jesus’ superiority to the angels emphasizes the superiority of the new covenant to the old because of the heavenly priesthood of Jesus.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.

Flesh: the whole person, used probably against docetic tendencies (cf 1 John 4:2; 1:7). Made his dwelling: literally, “pitched his tent/tabernacle.” Cf the tabernacle or tent of meeting that was the place of God’s presence among his people (Exodus 25:8-9). The incarnate Word is the new mode of God’s presence among his people. The Greek verb has the same consonants as the Aramaic word for God’s presence (Shekinah). Glory: God’s visible manifestation of majesty in power, which once filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34) and the temple (1 Kings 8:10-11, 27), is now centered in Jesus. Only Son: Greek, monogenes, but see the note on John 1:18. Grace and truth: these words may represent two Old Testament terms describing Yahweh in covenant relationship with Israel (cf Exodus 34:6), thus God’s “love” and “fidelity.” The Word shares Yahweh’s covenant qualities.

tim i hope this explains why sola scriptura: this does not imply that other books aren’t read or neglect to hear great teachers bring a lesson; what does insinuate, that we are to stick to scripture otherwise we allow a little yeast into the doctrine and it becomes infected.

i won’t comment anymore on this issue, i don’t want this to be some kind of boxing match we all have differences in minor details, what is important is letting people know of salvation that can be found in the work of Jesus Christ.

God bless.

Unfortunately, Jerry…all you did here was reinforce the basic Sunday School idea that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Nothing of what you wrote or quoted from shows that we are to go solely to Scripture. In fact, the very action words present in those verses are about “hearing” and “listening”…not “reading”. We hear and listen to human voices, Jerry, not a Book. We ‘read’ books, but those verses don’t say ‘read’. They don’t because God intended His teachings to be done primarily by humans, not a Book. Again, I must clarify (before you begin to claim Catholics care nothing of the Bible) that Sacred Scripture is an immensely significant pillar of the deposit of faith, fully reflecting, documenting and supporting the authentic human teaching (Tradition), but the inspired humans have primacy and inspired succession, and God understood that this is the best way for His Word to be passed down from age to age, because of the huge potential of conflicting private interpretation of the written word.

So, in summary, you did a decent job of proclaiming Jesus as Truth in your post here (which is very Catholic of you), but very little in supporting your errant notion of Sola Scriptura.

God Bless

what might be written
If Scriptures were not silent about Sola Scriptura

Do not let yourselves be decieved, there will be many who claim that they have been ordained of God to teach what our written Gospel means. Don’t listen to them. For we have written what you need to know and you know by reading, for faith is through reading.
As we have told you dear ones, we will not be teaching you in times to come for we are going the way of all the earth. If anyone, man or angel appears saying, come! This way! Hear the true teaching of the testament. Flee from them, for we will leave for all generations, in writing ,what we have taught for generations to come.
Anyone who claims to know a deeper meaning of things we have revealed in plain writing is anti-christ.
There will come a time when you will be scattered upon the earth and the church will become like mist. The testimony of our teaching upon the sacred page will remind you, and keep you, and bring you into the height , breadth, and width of truth once revealed, for all, through us, and baptised in the symbols of words on the blessed pages of God the Word you shall be saved.

steve you don’t know what i claim and furthermore this was in response to the foundation of my faith which was questioned this not a debate.

Read Eph 2:8,9 and let God answer you. Ralph

Dear Ralph, your reference to Scripture in answer to my reference to Scripture shows us clearly why the doctrine of individual interpretation must fail. And it does. We cannot teach or learn from Scripture by picking and choosing isolated verses and have them stand for the whole Gospel.

It is a habit of protestants to have Paul overrule the Lord, as you do with Mt. 25:31-46 v. Paul’s writings on faith. You do it all the time. You are repeatedly told the Catholic Church does not teach salvation by works, but you continue to insist she does. Matthew’s Gospel was written some time after Paul’s letters. I guarantee you, Ralph, if Paul had read Matthew 25:31-46 he would have been much more careful in his discourse about faith v. works. MUCH more careful.

It is not necessary for you to cite Scripture to me, Ralph. I’ve been through the NT and most of the OT many times. I know what it says. It does not say what you think it says.

May I suggest that if you want to correct Paul, you are a little too late, however you may still talk to his teacher, the Lord Jesus Christ, maybe you can straighten Him up seeing that you are so well versed in scripture. Ralph
