Sola Scriptura? What about St.Paul's statemant in 1 Cor.?

In 1 Corinthians 7:12 St. Paul says “Here I want to add some suggestions of my own. These are not direct commands from the Lord, but they seem right to me”. If Protestants claim the Bible is the only source one needs for teaching Christian life because it is the authoritive inspired word of God, what about Paul’s statement here? He is clearly saying this is not a direct command from God but something from himself. Later in 1 Cor.7:25 Paul states “But the Lord in his kindness has given me wisdom that can be trusted, and I will be glad to tell you what I think”.He is addressing marriage issues here. Paul is not teaching from any scripture here. He is also admiting his teaching is not a direct commandment from God, although he does say God has granted him wisdom. If Paul can teach in this way which is in scripture why can’t the Church body today? Would’nt pastors today claim they have wisdom from God and can teach the same? Is’nt this what the Catholic Church does today, teaching important issues for today because she has wisdom granted by the Lord. And it is plainly stated in scripture. So why do Protestants disagree with teaching outside of the Bible. The Apostles taught by oral tradition before there was any set cannon. As long as it does’nt take away from our Lord’s greatness what is the problem?

I think the protestant would say he/she has wisdom given to them from the Holy Spirit and therefore has the eyes needed to interpret the Bible. I don’t think this will be a major issue for protestants.

True. This might have been a bad analogy. I just found it interesting that Paul taught in this way.It seemed like proof of teaching outside of scipture. Protestants claim that the Bible is the sole authority but within that sole authority it seemed to me showing an Apostle teaching by outside means. I guess this is where the confusion of multiple denominations kicks in. Many different churches with many different beliefs all claiming to be lead by the Holy Spirit.

From having experienced evangelicals all my life, I can offer what I think would be their response. The first response would be made with certain presuppositions about the origin of the NT. That is, that Paul knew he was writing scripture. The second is similar: that Paul was speaking by the Spirit, so that his words are not just his, but also God’s. The sole authority is the Bible, that is the Old and New Testament together. How can one know that their interpretation is correct? By the Holy Spirit’s guidance! Of course, if someone else disagrees, then they are either (1) wrong, because that is not what scripture says, or (2) it doesn’t matter because as long as it doesn’t contradict scripture, it is right…It’s easy, right?
