Sola Scriptura: Where does it say that the Bible is the sole rule of faith?

I decided that I want to be a Lutheran. Somebody prove to me sola scriptura. Discuss.

Probably will find such (false) answers or ‘proof’ on the non-Catholic site, though I am not encouraging you.

It’s not in the Bible, which was not written in Latin. Nor can the Bible at all support such an approach.

Who compiled and gave us the bible?

Was the bible in existence already before the church?

Where in the bible can you tell me which books are supposed to be inspired and be included in it?

Tell me where in the Bible is the word “Trinity” found?

Sola Scriptura? I don’t think so.
 
If you want to be a Lutheran, this is the wrong place for advice! 😃

You won’t find any self-authentication in the Bible, and what you do tend to find is focus by Protestants on why Tradition is “wrong”, rather than why Sola Scriptura is “right”.

It’s not something that is provable. It comes from the belief that the more time passes, the more “stuff” people will add to the religion at issue.

Example: Consider all those rules that the Pharisees in Jesus’ day had added to the Law of Moses. That’s “stuff.” Jesus tried to get people back to what Moses had actually said. That’s “sola scriptura.”

If a priori you don’t believe that stuff can be added to your religion, then you will not accept any proof for sola scriptura.
 
To my knowledge the only place is where you will find “faith” and “alone” together is in James chapter 2, and it is not saying that man is justified by faith alone. It is saying that man IS NOT justified by faith alone.

That’s really not a proof against “sola scriptura.” There is no one verse in the Bible for a lot of theology. The easiest illustration is the doctrine of the trinity.

Glad to see you thought better of leaving the Church.
One thought I was going to put forward is, which version of Lutheranism would you have joined? There are many and each has different teachings. Each thinks they are the correct version as well and that the other versions are plain wrong.

I would add that there is also no discussion of the hypostatic union, either.

Stop and think how illogical Solo Scirptura, Solo Scriptura is in its self contradictory since Scripture does not teach solo Scriptura.

What did the first Christians do, all of the New Testment was not complete till close to the end of the first century, most of the New Testament was not even written till after 50 AD or later. Most of the churches did not have a complete new testament in the churches throught the known world until after 400 AD.

Most of the common folk could not afford a Bible OT or NT until the invention of the printing press which is somewhere around 1500 AD. These Bibles were all copied by hand there simply was not enough to go around. Vast majority of the world population couldn’t even read. How in the world from a realistic position could it ever be Sola Scriptura. Sola Scriptura was a complete invention for the 1500 to allow for a new authority in place of the church which lead to separation from the Catholic Church. It has caused nothing but division among Protestant churches all claiming truth from Sola Scriptura but all teaching things contradictory to each other. It can not work.

Biblical Teaching on the Bible
  • The first Christians “were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles” (Acts 2:42; cf 2 Tim.1:14) long before the NT was written - and centuries before the NT canon was settled.
  • The Bible affirms that Christian teaching is “preached” (1 Pet.1:25), that the Apostles’ successors were to teach what they have “heard” (2 Tim.2:2), and that Christian teaching is passed on both “by word of mouth [and] by letter” (2 Thess.2:15; cf. 1 Cor.11:2).
  • Not everything Christ did is recorded in Sacred Scripture (John 21:25).
  • NT authors availed themselves of Sacred Tradition. For example, Acts 20:35 quotes a saying of Jesus that was not recorded in the Gospels.
  • Scripture needs an authoratative interpreter (Acts 8:30-31; 2 Pet.1:20-21, 3:15-16).
  • Christ left a Church with divine authority to teach in His Name (Matt.16:13-20, 18:18; Luke 10:16). The Church will last until the end of time, and the Holy Spirit protects the Church’s teaching from corruption (Matt.16:18, 28:19-20; John 14:16).
  • The Church - and not the Bible alone - is the “pillar and bulwark of the truth” (1 Tim.3:15).
  • The Bible does not refer to Scripture as the exclusive source of the Word of God. Jesus Himself is the Word (John 1:1, 14), and in 1 Thess.2:13, St Paul’s first epistle, he refers to “the Word of God which you heard from us.” There St Paul is clearly referring to oral apostolic teaching: Tradition.
