Well, I don’t know if you have ever debated with a reformed protestant, an ex-Catholic reformed protestant at that. But they believe in the Eucharist, of course they don’t believe it takes the word of a priest, to consecrate a host. because at the best, that’s implicit in scripture. You can’t really parallel anything with the OT like the priesthood, because Christ fulfilled the Law, and the OT is done, “Finished.” They believe in Sola Scriptura, and that the Church Fathers taught Sola Scriptura. They believe that the original Church ended with the beginning of Papal Supremacy, when the Bishop of Rome was no longer a first among equals. But thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

The Church Fathers taught SS? I took a peek…and the site is cherry picking the quotes. As with Bible passages, the best way to refute it is to go back to the original source…and read the actual passage to get the proper context.

My suggestion is to not to refute all, just refute one…for once you disprove one…the rest will you follow.

And always, ask them to prove their claims.

I keep thinking I need more than my bible to defend the Church

From the Bible, things that the original spectators could easily observe and accurately report:
Fact 1: There was a man called Jesus.
Fact 2: He claimed to be a messenger sent from God.
Fact 3: He did enough to prove that He was such a messenger.
Fact 4: Crowds followed Jesus and He had an inner circle to whom he spoke much more.
Fact 5: He commissioned His followers to continue His teaching and founded His Church.
Fact 6: Jesus affirmed that God would protect that teaching.

The writings of these facts—the Gospels – are comparable with other ancient documents from writers such as Caesar, Tacitus, Thucydides and others, they are all reliable as history.

Historically, they prove that the messenger sent from God worked many miracles to support His mission and teaching to the extent of forgiving sins. God as Truth cannot provide such power to prove falsehood, so the claims of Jesus are true, culminating in the fact of His resurrection from the dead.

So from the reliability of the Gospels as history, we now know that:

1. An infallible Church was founded by the Son of God
2. That infallible Church teaches that the Bible, as She has given us, is the inspired Word of God.

Since Christ’s Church defined what historical writings are the inspired Word of God, and no others, and since no one else has that authority historically from Christ, “sola Scriptura” is a fantasy from the beginning.

Now this Bible produced by Catholics is the only way that we know:
That Christ wrote nothing and used quotes from the OT, as He established His Church and explicitly made four promises to Peter alone:
“You are Peter and on this rock I will build My Church.” (Mt 16:18)
“The gates of hell will not prevail against it.”(Mt 16:18)
I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven.” ( Mt 16:19)
“Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven.” (Mt 16:19)

Sole authority:
“Strengthen your brethren.” (Lk 22:32)
“Feed My sheep.”(Jn 21:17).

Having commissioned Peter as His first Supreme Vicar, Jesus instructed the eleven and proclaimed: “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations….teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you until the consummation of the world.” (Mt 28:18-20). A teaching authority founded by God must be worthy of God – certain in truth, infallible. Jesus gave Peter the power of binding and loosing, and the Keys of the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus wrote nothing. His Church gave us the Sacred Scriptures. Why deny them, or corrupt them?
