This is in reply to believers post in another thread;

Hmmm that’s strange, your authority is a book? I know that “book” of which you speak is the bible but did you know that the Bible says that the pillar and foundation of truth is NOT the bible? If you want to “do what the bible says” then I would “breathe in” these words which are in the bible.

Pray to the Holy Spirit and let him guide you as you read the following passages from Sacred Scripture; :gopray:
15 But if I should be delayed, you should know
how to behave in the household of God, which
is the church of the living God, the pillar
and foundation
of truth. 1 Tim 3:15

Jesus never had an actual book he gave to the Apostles and other disciples and he never said, “here’s the book, you’re on your own. You have to figure it out and no one here on earth will help you figure it out.” He never said that or anything remotely close to that. Jesus did not leave us “orphans” without a shephard here on earth to guide us. Peter our first Pope, had the guarantee of the Holy Spirit just as our current Pope has the guarentee of the Holy Spirit when it comes to Faith & Morals.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Advocate ***** to be with you always,
17 the Spirit of truth, ** which the world cannot accept,
because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it,
because it remains with you, and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:16-18

Commentary in NAB
***** [16] - Another Advocate: Jesus is the first advocate (paraclete);
see 1 John 2:1, where Jesus is an advocate in the sense of
intercessor in heaven. The Greek term derives from legal
terminology for an advocate or defense attorney, and can mean
spokesman, mediator, intercessor, comforter, consoler, although
no one of these terms encompasses the meaning in John. The
Paraclete in John is a teacher, a witness to Jesus, and a
prosecutor of the world, who represents the continued presence
on earth of the Jesus who has returned to the Father.

** [17] - The Spirit of truth: this term is also used at Qumran, where
it is a moral force put into a person by God, as opposed to the
spirit of perversity. It is more personal in John; it will teach the
realities of the new order (John 14:26), and testify to the truth
(John 14:6). While it has been customary to use masculine
personal pronouns in English for the Advocate, the Greek word
for “spirit” is neuter, and the Greek text and manuscript variants
fluctuate between masculine and neuter pronouns.

26 The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will
send in my name–he will teach you everything and
remind you of all that (I) told you. John 14:26

“The preaching of the cross”
I believe ON what Jesus did ON the cross. He died for ALL of our sins. The disobedience of Adam was corrected by the obedience of Jesus. We are now justified by the blood of Jesus. We are now baptized in the Holy Ghost by His resurrection which NOW saves us.

You guys seem to think that water baptism saves. It never did in the OT and neither does water baptism save in the NT. Baptism in the Holy Ghost is the only baptism that NOW saves. That’s is what I believe on. Baptism in the Holy Ghost comes with believing in the preaching of the cross.

Preaching of the Cross?

Please explain to me that one?

Did you bother to read AlegraFe’s posts?

I am not ridiculing you but just asking if you did?

Explain it to me like I am a 2 year old.

Jhn 6:29
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe ON him whom he hath sent.
Yes, And who did Jesus send into the world?

It needs to be asked that if the Scriptures do not explicitly state that the Scriptures themselves are the most trustworthy way of knowing God’s will, then what do the Scriptures actually say in regards to those who were entrusted to correctly carry the Word of God?

In other words, how do we know the Spirit of Truth?

We know that John 4:24 clearly states that God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.

We also know that John 14:17 clearly states that he, the Spirit of truth, will be known by us-- for he will live with us and is in us.

In addition to this, we also know that John 16:13 clearly states that Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth. The Scriptures even proclaim that he will not speak on his own-- he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell us what is yet to come.

According to John 18:37, when Jesus was facing off against Pilate, Jesus clearly stated:
You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.
Later, according to, 1 John 4:6, we hear an echo of the Spirit from Jesus’s own apostles’ restating the same exact message:
We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
In Luke 10:16 we see this very same message being formulated:
He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.
If John 6:29 says that the work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent, then who are those that Jesus sent into the world?
Matthew 28:18-20:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Jesus promised he would never leave us. Even more, Christ is the the very Word of God who lives in us by the Holy Spirit through our baptism.

Check it out…

Hebrews 4:12 say that the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

But what or who is the Word of God?
John1:1:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…

…Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
In other words, as Romans 9:8 says, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1 Peter 1:23 say that you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

1 John 2:14 says I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.

Colossians 3:16 says to let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Romans 8:9 says that you are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:16 asks. “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?”

2 Corinthians 13:4 says he was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God’s power. Likewise, we are weak in him, yet by God’s power we will live with him to serve you.

Galatians 2:20 says I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Ephesians 2:22 says in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:14 says to guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

1 John 4:12 says if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

1 John 4:15 says if anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.

1 John 4:16 says and so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Colossians 1:29 says to this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 asks, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”

How anyone could deny that the Spirit of God, the very Word of God, is not repeatedly testified in the Sacred Scriptures as living in those who are baptized into his death and rise up to proclaim Christ is simply beyond me. You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

There’s no need to get mad. I’ll try to explain… The Jews in the OT lived and died by the Law of Moses. Whenever they broke one of the 10 Commandments, they had to make a blood sacrifice or sin offering at the temple to make things right with God. The wages for sin was death.

John’s water baptism DID NOT wash away sins. It was just an anology of what happens by the baptism of repentance. John preached “the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” He was prepping the followers of Jesus.

All baptisms after the death, burial, resurrection of Jesus refers to the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

The verses below are just a few that came to mind. This is by no means a comprehensive list. There’s so much more on this topic.

Mat 3:11
I indeed baptize you with water UNTO repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire:

Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto [them] all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

Luk 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, PREACHING the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

Mar 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, AND preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.

Act 1:22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

Act 10:37 That word, *, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John PREACHED;

Act 13:24 When John had first PREACHED before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Act 18:25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.

Act 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism.

Act 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should BELIEVE ON HIM which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

Act 19:5
When they heard [this], they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus

Act 19:6
And when Paul had laid [his] hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Act 19:7
And all the men were about twelve.

(Remember, Paul said in 1Cr 1:17, "For Christ sent me NOT TO baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.)

1Pe 3:21
The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also NOW save us (NOT the putting away of the filth of the flesh (water baptism), but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1Cr 1:18
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Mar 16:15
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mar 16:16
He that BELIEVETH and is baptized (refers to the baptism of the Holy Ghost) shall be saved; but he that BELIEVETH NOT shall be damned.

Mar 3:29
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

You are baptized with the Holy Ghost when you BELIEVE that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross for ALL of your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God. The only way to be covered by the blood is to BELIEVE and that is the gift. The wages for sin is death, and Jesus paid our debt in full with His blood.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:*

Then what about babies? Can babies believe in Jesus? How about those who are profoundly mentally disabled? Can the profoundly mentally disabled believe in Jesus?

believers:
Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
You forgot part of that verse…
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
By the way, I think this passage is warning against those who think ‘their own’ faith will save them. But it is not their own faith which saves them. It is Christ’s faith which saves them.

As the passage clearly states, this faith is not from yourselves. This faith is from God-- through God’s grace. In other words, when Christ is living in them and believing for them, then they are saved through his faith which he shares with us through the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus was walking on the water, why did Peter start to sink?

He didn’t sink because he didn’t have enough faith. He sank because he started to trust in his own faith instead of Jesus’ faith. In other words, when Peter was walking on the water, Jesus was walking for him by faith-- Christ was enabling Peter to walk by Jesus’ own divine faith which he was sharing with Peter at this time. But when Peter started to trust in ‘his own’ faith – which wasn’t from God – he forgot that Jesus was walking for him and he began to sink into his own human faith.

This is what Paul is refering to in Colossians 1:29 when he says, “To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.”

This is what Peter meant when he asked, “Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?”

He later clarifies, “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.”

This faith that we have is the very faith that Jesus shares with us through the Holy Spirit. And it’s a portion of Jesus’ faith, the power which he felt leave him when the woman was healed…
“Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.”
But Jesus said, “Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
continued…

…continued.
Do you think the creation had to have faith in Jesus to be created?
Hebrews 11:3:
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
No. Clearly, it was Jesus’ faith which enabled the creation to happen. The same is true with our own participation in the new creation through baptism our in the Lord.

Galatians 6:15 states that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 clearly states, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Look here

St. Paul tells us that the crossing of the Red Sea foreshadowed baptism in 1 Corinthians 10:1-4. St. Peter saw a clear sign of baptism in the story of Noah in 1 Peter 3:18-21.

Early Christian writers saw significance in all details of the great deluge. The dove which announced new life to Noah prefigures the dove which came down upon Christ at his baptism and the Holy Spirit which comes to us through ours. The ark is a figure of the church, outside which there is no life. The wood of the ark is a herald of the cross through which Christ brought salvation. Even the eight people on the ark are seen as a symbol of the eighth day of the week – the day of the resurrection, the day of the new creation.

The crossing of the Red Sea is likewise another sign of the baptism to come in the New Covenant. Here again, water is not for cleansing, but for destruction. And there is the further element of liberation from slavery. Just as the Hebrews were liberated from subjection to Pharaoh, so are we liberated from slavery to sin.

Consequently, we truly see the power of Jesus’s faith whenever the dead, such as Jairus’ daughter, are raised-- unless you are arguing that the dead can pray for their own deliverance.

Do you think that Jairus’ daughter had faith in Jesus even though she was dead?

But that opens up a whole new set of questions, doesn’t it?

1Pe 4:17 For the time [is come] that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if [it] first [begin] at us, what shall the end [be] of them that obey not the gospel of God?

And yes, the Bible ONLY.

Hbr 4:12

I appreciate all the scripture verses that you lay out for us. I see that you are convinced that you are correct And for now, that is fine. It has to be fine. Why, you say? Because it is obviously in God’s plan that you go through this to be part of your journey back home to the Catholic Church.

With that, no matter how many scripture verses I read that you present to us, is not going to change Catholic Doctrine and it certainly won’t change what I believe in my heart to be the Truth. I believe that you will feel the same way. Nothing that I could say or do will get you to see the Truths of the Catholic Church. Only God can make you see the Truth. And that is why I will pray for you. :gopray:

I just wish that you at least give these posts a chance. It seems that you don’t even read them. Not that all that scripture wasn’t fabulous:thumbsup: , but if I won’t have enough space if I post it.

I wonder, if for the moment, we could set aside the issue of infant baptism? There are two separate issues. Infant baptism can be done all on it’s own and focus on adult baptism?

Unfortunately, I just realized, that is way off track. I do not have time to start a new thread (although I could probably take a peek or two if a link were posted;) ), but if anyone else does, it would be interesting for the parties here to discuss, FIRST, whether or not the interpretation of scripture about baptism being symbolic or is an actual miracle of God made visable.

A scripture verse that could start that discussion could be this one.

Titus 3:5-7 he saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, 6 which he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.

Unfortunately as I said, discussion of the scripture having to do with adult baptism and whether or not it is just a symbol (something man does) or a visable miracle of God (something God does to us), is off topic.

God Bless,
Maria

Good points MariaG. 🙂

Consequently, I think that AlegreFe offered a super-adundance of good points for believers to consider further. It would be interesting if believers would at least attempt to answer her posts.

Only the Holy Spirit can make you see the truth. But before that can happen, you must be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Baptism in the Holy Ghost only comes with BELIEVING in the blood of Jesus.

Please consider this… If faith in the blood of Jesus alone is required to enter Heaven, it will be impossible for you to enter. Because you did not have faith in the blood. You believed in water baptism. You will have no one else to blame but yourselves. I only hope that one day you’ll at least consider this possibility. Your eternal salvation rests on this issue.

I used to believe as you guys. Now, I believe the Bible ALONE teaches that it’s the blood alone.

Why should God let me into Heaven? Because I have faith in the blood of the only begotten Son of God. And by His blood, He is my Rock, my Redeemer, my King, my Lord, my Savior.

Jhn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Only the Holy Spirit can make you see the truth. But before that can happen, you must be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
I have the Holy Spirit thank you. I was Confirmed and received the Holy Spirit many years ago. And I continue to receive the Holy Spirit when I receive Jesus in Holy Communion every Sunday and even on some week days.

That’s just it, “faith in the blood of Jesus alone” is not the only thing that is required to enter into heaven. We do not “require” anything to enter into heaven as you put it. The only thing that will get me into heaven is the Grace of Jesus Christ. And that Grace comes from the Passion of Jesus Christ. I DO believe that the blood of Jesus Christ is what saves me. Who told you that Catholics do not believe in this? That is why I receive His Body & Blood at Holy Communion. I believe that I am saved by Grace through Faith and that I show my Faith by my works. I show my Faith by Charity to my neighbor. Faith without works is DEAD. I don’t want to be DEAD, so I show my Faith with works. How do you “show” your Faith? Just by “confessing with your lips” that Jesus is Lord & Savior? or that you just believe the blood saves you? Sorry that doesn’t cut it.

Because you did not have faith in the blood. You believed in water baptism. You will have no one else to blame but yourselves. I only hope that one day you’ll at least consider this possibility. Your eternal salvation rests on this issue.
You have no idea what you are talking about. One day you will see it.

I used to believe as you guys. Now, I believe the Bible ALONE teaches that it’s the blood alone.

Please don’t insult us. You NEVER believed as we do. If you did, you would’ve never left the Catholic Church.

Why should God let me into Heaven? Because I have faith in the blood of the only begotten Son of God. And by His blood, He is my Rock, my Redeemer, my King, my Lord, my Savior.
Yes, He is our Rock, our Redeember, our King, our Lord & our Savior. But your belief in His blood alone is not going to get you into Heaven. Only the Grace of God will get you into Heaven. With God’s Grace you will be able to repent of your sins and come back to the Church. I hope that one day you will allow the Grace of God to touch you so that you can see and believe what we believe.

Only the Holy Spirit can make you see the truth. But before that can happen, you must be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Baptism in the Holy Ghost only comes with BELIEVING in the blood of Jesus.

Hi Believers,

Problem here is that I used to believe as you but have come to the fullness of the truth in the Catholic Church.

Solidly grounded Christians who read the bible everyday and have a personal relationship with Christ become Catholic. But most Catholics who leave the Church, never read it before they left it. But maybe I am wrong about you. Did you have a personal relationship with Christ before you left the Church? Read your bible? Go to a Catholic led Bible study? Or did you only do those things after you left the Catholic Church?

Nowhere in Scripture does it tell us to believe in the Bible alone. In fact, it tells us quite the opposite. You contradict scripture when you follow **only **the written word of God.

:bible1: 2thes 2:15 So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

Where is the spoken word that we were told to stand firm and hold onto or where in scripture does it tell us it has all been written down now, only follow the written?

Faith in Christ’s blood alone does not equal faith in the Bible alone.

Catholics completely believe that we are saved through the Grace of God alone made possible through the saving blood of Christ’s sacrifice. Nothing we can do will ever earn us the gift of salvation.

Your sister in Christ,
Maria

Hi Maria, I wrote this just for you. Maybe this will clear up the traditions mentioned in 2 Thessalonians.

Who was Paul? He was the apostle to the gentiles. He was previously Saul of Tarsus until he was converted on the Road to Damascus. He helped hunt down the believers in Christ until the Lord intervened and spoke to him. He then became a follower and received revelations direct from the Lord. Because the Jews rejected Jesus as the Messiah, he went to the gentiles instead.

According to the book of Acts (Acts 17:1-4), Paul established the church at Thessalonica on his second missionary journey.

In 1 Thessalonians, the first half of the letter (ch 1-3) deals with Paul’s relationship with the Thessalonians and the nature of his ministry while among them. **The second half (ch 4-5) provides the instruction on godly living and on the return of Christ. **

After about a month of ministry in Thessalonica, Paul was forced to leave to Berea. When Paul’s jewish opponents pursued him there, he went on to Athens.

Act 17:10
And the brethren (at Thessalonica) immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming [thither] went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Now, notice here how the believers at Berea were MORE NOBLE than the ones in Thessalonica because “they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily.”

Act 17:11
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

In 2 Thessalonians, the Thessalonians believed they had missed the coming of the Lord (which we Bible only believers call the rapture). He wrote this letter to calm the church and to correct the false teaching they received. He also deals with the idleness of those who refused to work and the busybodies who were causing problems.

Finally in 2 Thessalonians… Paul writes

2Th 2:15
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

The traditions referred to in this verse refers to the traditions taught in 1 Thessalonians in Chapters 4-5. NOT THE RCC TRADITIONS.
