The last comment is absurd; Catholics don’t believe relying on God’s written word is Satanic.
Thank you for the clarification. I didn’t think so. So then “excaliber” doesn’t speak for all Catholics here. Right?

His rationale is that since Satan used Scripture to to tempt Jesus, Satan then invented “sola Scriptura.” Do you also believe that’s a correct conclusion? Do you believe, then, that all Protestants who adhere to the idea of “sola Scriptura” are Satanic or Satanically deceived? Are you concluding that Protestants are Satanic?
Relying on private interpretation, which is condemned in the Bible itself, is.
Are you referring to 2 Pet. 1:20-21? Peter isn’t prohibiting individuals from interpreting the Scriptures in those verses, but rather stating a fact about the prophetic Scriptures. That they did not originate with the prophets themselves, not by an act of their own will (no Scripture was), “but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.”
Besides, Every time a Protestant quotes the Bible, he is relying on the sacred Tradition of the Catholic Church, because that is the Church which formed the canon of the Bible!
Certainly you’re not contending that the Scriptures didn’t officially exist until the council of Carthage, are you?

In my post I referenced Lk. 24:27 where it says Jesus began with Moses and with all the prophets explained the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures. Now we know that the Jews never had a council to determined which writings were Scripture. Yet at the time of Christ, they knew which writing were. In the same vain, we see that Irenaeus who lived in the second century quoted most of the N.T. books, as Scripture, in his writings. They were known in his day as “The Gospel and the Apostles,” as the O.T. books were called “The Law and the Prophets.” Tertullian in his writings spoke of the Christian Scriptures as the “New Testament.” And in his extant writings we find around 1800 quotations from the N.T. books. Even Origin quoted from them extensively and accepted the 27 books of the N.T. as Scripture And when Eusebius was commissioned by Constantine to put together fifty “Bibles” for his kingdom, he traveled extensively to the various churches and found out what books they, corporately, accepted as Scripture. In the end, the books that constituted his N.T. were exactly the same 27 that are in our Bibles today. All of this occurred before the Council of Carthage. So, in respect to the N.T., Carthage only ratified what was already accepted amongst the churches.

As the Jews recognized their Scriptures, so did the early Christians. But it’s not men who, traditionally, made them “Scripture.” They are inherently. They stand alone by their own divine Authority.

Not even having a high position in the church guarantees one’s understanding of the Scriptures. Remember, Jesus even had to explain the prophetic Scriptures concerning His suffering, death and resurrection to His own Apostles. And for several centuries the biggest controversy amongst the high ranking Bishops within the empire, east and west, was Arianism. Even after the Council of Nicea. Ultimately, the deity of Christ wasn’t settled by “tradition,” but by what was revealed of Him in the Scriptures. Blind reliance on Bishops proved to be dangerous. Can Scripture be misinterpreted and abused? Certainly! But that’s a testimony against men. So today, even as in Christ’s day, it’s the teachings and traditions of men that must be tested by the Scriptures.

I’m just curious, is it a house Church? A loosely connected small body of believers praying together and working in each others lives out of Christian love?
It started as a house church but that was before I was around.
Who cares where I go to church??

Why would I give out the name of my church? Don’t you guys read the newspapers?
Yes , and I don’t have to be deceptive, I go to St. Martha’s Catholic Church. By the way a study by the FBI said that Catholics are becoming the most discriminated group within the USA but I’m not afraid to let you know were I go to Church.

I like your reasoning about the Roman part and that makes sense.
My church is just a church. We do not belong to a denomination. The church was started by a former atheist.
You should read 95 Catholic Verses, or a Biblical Defense of Catholicism. My father, an anti-Catholic, Mary-demoting, Pope-detesting Fundamentalist who believes all the Jack Chick nonsense (Yes-- I grew up hearing the Roman Catholic Church being called the “Whore of Babylon”) is currently reading them. He’s softened up a bit towards the Catholics, so perhaps he can deal with the fact of my conversion to Catholicism alot better… hopefully.

I think divisions among Christians are clearly against God’s expressed will. Sola scriptura may have been part of how the divisions happened, but I don’t know if Satan himself grabbed the pen or left it up to human pride and fallen intellect to figure out that tool itself. “IMHO”

Just look around. the inconsistencies abound thats why the vatican warned people from taking the bible ‘literally’.
I think that the Catholic Church has warned people about misinterpreting the bible. As one of the greatest gifts from the Catholic Church to the world, the bible is very consistent. Remember, in 1 Tim 3:14 St. Paul tells us that the church of the living God is the pillar and foundation of truth. This is the one Church which Christ founded and its interpretations are true.

When people become “uncomfortable” with what the inspired Word of God really means, they tend to invent their own interpretation to meet their needs. This is how false concepts, such as sola scriptura and salvation by faith alone, come about.

Moondweller I never said that…or even ment to imply that. It seems that you interpreted what I said in a VERY different way from what I ment. This is what happens sometimes with people who try to use there bible as there only athority. They interpret the bible incorectly.

Speaking from experience the Jw
Draw converts using THERE translation of the bible, knowone is impresed by the watchtower organization. So they give the impretion that they are sola scripture, and that there books are only bible aids.It is NORMALY not untill much later that the jw learns
that the Watchtowr bent the bible to fit there doctrine…there doctrine was not shaped by the bible. The point is Jw’s THINK Watchtower has athority from the bible only, which is sola scripture.

From the bible Jw’s think: You must die rather then use blood in a medical procedure.
There is no hell, or after death there is no punishment.
You will not go to heaven. (most wont)
You should not pursue a colledge career, after highschool you should
spend most of your time going door to door.
And finaly that young men should work for the watchtower fulltime at one of the three facilities in new york…FOR FREE…and stay FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. These three facilities in newyork are called Bethel. And last year Watchtower reasigned or basicly LAID OFF workers from bethel that had no home…no money…no paying jobs…they were COMPLETELY dependent on the watchtower for both shelter and food. I know because I was one of them, the watchtower did NOT help me find a job…the watchtower did NOT help me find a place to live even until I could get back on my feet.the watchtower never so much as called to check on whether I was alive or dead, to this day they don’t know where I am and they told me I was a “bethel FAMILY member”. the watchtower could not care less for bethelites…or the people they send door to door to get converts.
I was tricked by people using the BIBLE. Who was pleased by this satan…or God?

Sola scriptura…the athority that people claim using the bible to mislead people is from satan.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are not Christian or Protestant (denying the Trinity and that Jesus is God the Son) and it is not sola scriptura. They use the New World Translation, which is a distorted translation done to support the teachings of the Watchtower and Bible Tract Society. The Bible is not their final authority; the Watchtower Society is which claims that only they can interpret the Bible. If anything, on the question of authority, the Jehovah’s Witnesses would be closer to the Catholic Church which also teaches that it is necessary to correctly interpret Scripture. I would not compare the Catholic Church in any other way and neither would I compare them to those who believe in sola scriptura.

Sycal I respect your oppinion.

HOWEVER The watchtower claims to be a restoration of christianity…and It CLAIMS that there translation is the most acurate. The watchtower is the opposite of the Catholic church in most ways.

sycal you might not like it…but the watchtower is sola scripture. We canot pick and choos the churches we like and call only them sola scripture.

Sycal why exactly do you think the watchtower is not sola scripture ?

For one thing it requires its members to accept its interpretation of scripture as absolute. Witnesses are not to consider any other possible interpretation or even discuss them. It is a question of where the authority comes from. A sola scripturist would say that the bible is the final and only infallible rule of faith and the churches teaching would be consistent with the bible. To a Jehovah’s Witness the Watchtower Society is the final authority because it tells them how they must interpret scripture.

For the record, it’s “Sola Scriptura” not “sola scripture” and I think the Witnesses have a Sola Scriptura view but only regard their mistranslation as the true Word of God.
By the way, did you know that Russell Taze (The Watchtower cult founder) thought that the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt was a divinely-inspired “Bible in stone” that he based his “prophesies” on? He was clearly a false prophet who used occultic means to draw conclusions on the End Times and Armaggedon.

Again I respect your OPINION. But I was raised Jw, the next time a jw comes to your door count how many times they say the bible says incomparison with how many times they say …the watchtower says. The word sola scriptura is new to me I apologies for getting the term wrong. I copied what you said and JW’S very much fit the description of sola scriptura.

The fact is that what merton said about C.T. Russel is not known by most jw…if jw’S came to your door claiming there athority came from there organization…don’t you think they would know something about that organization? But most jw don’t know of the top of there head who the president is now…let alone details about there founder.

Sycal I can understand where you are comeing from…you look at the watchtower with its crazy teachings and predictions…and its
changed bible…and you think this canot be a product of sola scriptura…BUT IT IS.

I WILL PROVE IT!!!
Call any kingdom hall ask to speak to one of there elders, and he will show you from the bible of your choice where Jw doctrine is…or there interpretation.

Be prepared jw know thre way around the bible. As a whole this group knows there way around the bible better then most denominations. You will find that groups as different as your church and JW both claim the bible as there athority.

Who has confused us…its not God
…its not the bible…Its sola scriptura.

I think sola scriptura is from satan.

Again you must understand what scripture alone means. A church that is sola scriptura does not claim to be infallible. Only the bible is infallible. The Watchtower Society may claim that the bible is infallible but they also claim that they are infallible. Once they claim that they too are infallible, it by definition not sola scriptura since that principal recognizes only one infallible authority.

Now I don’t think that Satan is a big fan of sola scriptura because he is ultimately going to try to set up the beast of Revalation and the false prophet. They will claim to be infallible but someone who truly believes in scripture alone will not buy that. While sola scriptura may tend to lead to disunity, which is off course not desirable, that very disunity will make it more difficult for the beast to establish his one false religion.

Did you ever tell us your basis for saying Jesus did not consider the Deuterocanonical books Scripture? I don’t remember Him every decrying those books…
I cannot post the link.
[Jesus, like the Jews of the first century, divided the Old Testament into three “collections”: the law, the prophets, the psalms. Jesus said: “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” (Luke 24:44)

I’m sorry, but your citation of Luke 24:44 does not even hint what you say; what is pointed out here is that what was written about Him (Jesus) was written in the Law, Psalms and the Prophets. The point was about Jesus, not what was to be taken as Scripture. Nothing there that say explicitly that the only things that were considered as Scripture were the Law, Psalms and the Prophets. Better try your luck next time, and read the passage in its proper context.

Sycarl I again and again respect your OPINION. But it will be difficult for you to tell a jw what jw’s teach.

To finally answer your question, KNOWONE in the jw organization claims to be inspired…no prophets…no apostles…Knowone in the whole watchtower organization is claiming to be infalible. I am sorry but you are not correct. Provide a document from watchtower saying it is infalible.Trust me on this many try to tell jw’s there own teachings but many times they are not informed correctly.

The watchtower claims its athority is from scripture.
