Regarding Sola Scriptura. I’m puzzled. First of all I keep hearing the words“Sola Scriptura”. Now isn’t that Latin, the language of The Catholic Church? If those that adhere to it, why do they use the term from what they call a “dead language”. I have seen some proclaim that there are five things that are “Sola Scriptura” and five things are NOT “Sola Scripture”. Can I be pointed to the bible where these five things are written down in scripture? If not, who made them up and by what authority? Then I have heard that all you need is the scriptures, nothing else and if a bible is dropped to somebody in an isolated place and they know nothing about Christ, but can read, they can pick up the bible and understand it. Ok, then why is it that when defending a certain scripture I keep hearing things like… “Well, if you understood old Greek you would understand why we do not believe that Peter is the rock because in Greek it means this, or in Aramaic it means that.” Also something like, “If you understand the Greek language the first participle of the second participle taking into consideration the narrative spoken, interchanging the verb and the adjective, blah, blah, blah, etc., etc., and more of same” then what happened to “Sola Scriptura”. I thought you could “clearly” understand it just by reading it yourself, without the help of some old fogies in the “Majeesterrium” or some liar sitting on some throne in Rome, or having to be an expert linguist? Also, if all you need is just “Sola Scriptura” why are footnotes needed in some Protestant bibles?

I saw in some other forum the question asked of a “Sola Scriptura” believer if he and another person could not come into agreement about a certain passage, who is correct. His answer was that he would then study the scriptures more to understand it properly. Again the question was asked, what if they still didn’t agree. He said he would study again and again. Still again the question if after all this studying, they still could not agree. His reply was that he would have to just leave it up to the Holy Spirit. Hmm…so who is right and who is wrong? How is it finally settled? No reply was ever given. I’m glad as a Catholic I know where I can go to get any dilemma settled.

I ran into a great link dealing with authority, which in turn answers the question, of who has authority to interpret scripture, or is scripture alone… beg pardon “Sola Scriptura” valid. I’m sure some of you have seen it.

You say,

<Bible Alone is easily refuted using the simple yet elegant argument of “who gave you authority to interpret scripture?”.>

Is this argument conclusive for a protestant? Why could not a protestant reply that most of the New Testament is in the form of letters–to individual churches as well to the Church at large? Why would letters need special interpretation? Were they not written to be read and understood? Paul affirms this.

2 Cor. 1:13 For we write nothing else to you than what you read and understand …
Eph. 3:4 And by referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

Hey Chris93g,

Just FYI, read John Henry Newman’s Development of Doctrine
(newmanreader.org/works/development/index.html)
(especially Chapter 2) for a very nuanced and original argument against Sola Scriptura. In reading it, I have found several points in it that go beyond the basic apologetic material on Sola Scriptura that I have seen before. At any rate, it might serve as a nice support to what you have above. However, it is rather densed and needs to be distilled.

You can always drop in on our discussion of it (see Newman Reading Group thread in the apologetics forum) to get some of the gist. (ok, so it is just a group of two, but…)
Just a thought.

My dinner with the Evangelicals/non-denoms was put off til next week. I met them at the abortion mill, they are wonderfully pro-life and wonderfull people. But they really believe the Chick booklets and they talk in tongues. When I told them I was Catholic they said they could see demons on my shoulder. I told them Jesus said “a house divided against itself cannot stand” - therefore I cannot be trying to stop abortion and be in league with the devil at the same time. They finially understood. Praise God they have saved 6-7 babies in 3 months. They have invited me to their house for dinner.
