Hi everyone,

Would you like to discuss the solas of the Protestant Reformation? I know there are always numerous discussions on Sola scriptura, and Sola fide. However, I think we should spend time on the solas of grace alone, by Christ alone and to the glory of God alone. We were saved to the praise of His glorious grace.

1 Sola scriptura (“by Scripture alone”)
2 Sola fide (“by faith alone”)
3 Sola gratia (“by grace alone”)
4 Solus Christus (“Christ alone”)
5 Soli Deo gloria (“glory to God alone”)

Sounds good to me 👍

I love your signature quote by Martin Luther. It seems very similar to what the Apostle Paul wrote and used on my signature.

“Faith is a living and unshakable confidence, a belief in the grace of God so assured that a man would die a thousand deaths for its sake.” - Martin Luther

😉

He was very familiar with Paul, thank God for that much!

Are you Presbyterian?

👋 Hi Reformed! Welcome to Catholic Answers! I would love to discuss these issues with you, but I have too much stuff on my plate right now. 😃 I believe you’re a Calvinist, right? Are you a five pointer or a four pointer? 🙂

God Bless,
Michael

😉

Are you Presbyterian?
I’m just a Christian. I can embrace both the Westminster Confession and the London Baptist Confession of 1689 at the same time…lol.

Well, the London Baptist Confession is pretty much the same. I mean, do you belong to a Presbyterian congregation?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am a Christian who believes the 5 points to be true according to the Scriptures. I do not believe that embracing the 5 points of Calvinism to be essential for salvation. I look forward to future discussions when time permits. I believe the 5 points of Calvinism when understood with the mind and heart, we grow you closer to God.

When I lived in southern CA near Westminster West seminary, my family and I were members at the PCA Church in Fallbrook, CA. We moved to Oregon about 6 years ago, and haven’t found a good Reformed Church. We attend a non-denominational church with a Reformed pastor. How about you?

Let’s take one point at a time…

Let’s start with showing us where sola scriptura is scriptural.

BTW, welcome to CAF, I hope you last longer here than the other forum. 😉

May the peace of the Lord be with you,

I lived in southern CA, too, for a few years. In San Bernardino County. I am Lutheran, but back then I attended a congregation of the United Reformed Churches in North America for quite a while in addition to a Missouri Synod church. I live in Ohio now and have a close friend who is part of the OPC, so I go there from time to time.

Ugh, can we maybe go in reverse order? Only because there are about 50 sola scriptura threads to choose from LOL.

I recognize this poster from another forum. I was throwing out what he never answered then. 😉

Afterall, he’s the one who said:

So, let’s see the scriptural evidence for sola scriptura.

I think in that instance he meant the 5 points of Calvinism instead of the 5 solas.

Hi,

There seems to be more breathing room on this site. I tried to keep the same name, hoping that others from that other RC forum site would want to continue our discussions. Actually, I am familar with Catholic Answers because I lived in southern CA for 40 years. I think the ex-Protestants at Catholic Answers should be able to understand Protestants better, and with greater patience. Thanks for the warm welcome too!

Please understand Prodigal Son1, many of the non-Catholic posts and threads started are edited and deleted by the moderators at that other site. Therefore, you only read the closely edited versions of my posts. There are always two sides to the story. Did you know that most of my posts on the other site had to get the moderator’s approval before you were able to read them? This site seems to appear to be more equitable and fair.

There seems to be a bit more tolerance here as long as you don’t attempt to convert Catholics away from the Church. 😛

I’m not going to discuss specifics of the other forum. I have my own opinion of what was what there, as you should know. 😉

Now, you seriously gonna show us scriptural support for Sola Scriptura?

God Bless,
Prodigal Son1

Shouldn’t we define Sola Scriptura first?

Shouldn’t we define Sola Scriptura first?
Sola Scriptura:
Sola scriptura (Latin ablative, “by scripture alone”) is the assertion that the Bible as God’s written word is self-authenticating, clear (perspicuous) to the rational reader, its own interpreter (“Scripture interprets Scripture”), and sufficient of itself to be the final authority of Christian doctrine.
Ok, now show us scriptural support for Sola Scriptura?

To be honest, you remind me of my last debate with him on this subject. He answered a lot of questions with questions. 😛

Uhm, no 😛 But since there are ideas within forums that do not represent what Sola Scriptura is, so it always help to say what it is and isn’t.
