This morning, a bout with a migraine caused me to wake up at 4:00. I managed to catch the live feed from Birmingham, England of the Solemn Mass for the translation of the remains of John Henry Cardinal Newman.
I must say, even in my medicated state, I found the Mass to be quite beautiful and edifying. In fact, the music was incredible and the homily was excellent.
What struck me the most about the Mass was the fact that the Liturgy of the Eucharist was celebrated facing liturgical East and that the faithful knelt at the Communion Rail in order to receive Our Lord. Although there were some who received Holy Communion in the hand, a majority of the communicants received on the tongue. Most of the Mass, with the exception of the readings and the homily, was said in Latin.
The vestments were magnificent. The Archbishop of Birmingham wore a white and gold fiddleback chasuble. The concelebrants also wore the same style of vestment.
Overall, everything was superb. I hope y’all managed to catch the broadcast or, at least, the replay.
