Hey everyone
Today I received a letter in the mail from my college inviting me to the Phi Theta Kappa honor society, and I took it as good news, but I am just a little concerned over the pledge for joining the honor society, it reads as follows:
I believe in and support the purpose of the Society, meet eligibility standards for membership as stated in the Phi Theta Kappa Constitution and adhere to the moral standards of the Society. Therefore, I solemnly promise to uphold the standards of Phi Theta Kappa, and to keep this object and aim in mind, and I do solemnly pledge allegiance to my fellow members and promise to aid them in all worthy endeavors.
Now I am concerned over whether I as a Catholic should be solemnly pledging anything at all, and I was wondering if you could fill me in on the Church’s position on things like honor societies that require this sort of pledge statement, and if such pledges binding under pain of sin?
