Hi,
I googled the web for a while, then decided this would probably be the right place to ask this.🙂

I’d like to find out some things about the Sunday mass called “Solemn Vespers and Benediction” (in England - in case it counts)

a) it’s not in Latin, is it?
b) there is a sermon, right?

Thank you.

Vespers is not a Mass. It is the evening office of the Liturgy of the Hours. It is centered mainly on the recitation of the psalms. Being solemn Sunday Vespers, the office will probably be chanted or sunf. That could mean Latin, or it may not. If its a traditionalist community like FSSP, it will be based on the 1960 breviary and in Latin. If not it will based on the 1970 Liturgy of the Hours which may be in either Latin or the vernacular.

If it’s in a monastery, it will likely be based on a monastic breviary, either in Latin or the vernacular.

Benediction means benediction by our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. It’s a very beautiful service. At least in our monastery it happens every first Friday of the month after Vespers, and after Sunday Vespers (also on solemnities), followed by a half hour of adoration of the exposed Blessed Sacrament.

Sometimes there’s a homily (sermon) at Vespers but in my experience that’s rare.

Oh. Thank you so much!🙂
I have never encountered these names, as I never had to choose between so many different Liturgies.
Kind regards,
