Solomn High Mass in EF on EWTN

This Saturday if anyone hasn’t heard there will be a Solomn High Mass in EF on EWTN at 8 am. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand one’s horizons with the Sacred Liturgy. Though I have never been to a mass in EF like this I do watch on TV when available. This allows me to have not only appreciation for the TLM, but also for the Novus Ordo Mass that I celebrate every Sunday. I felt this way after the first time I watched a high mass on EWTN and when I watched a Maronite Rite Mass on EWTN as well. I hope all feels the way I do about appreciation of the Liturgy in whole. Anyone care to comment??
 
Last time I watched a solemn mass on EWTN they had too much commentary. Time before that it was good. 🤷
 
Seeing the Solemn Pontifical Mass at the faldstool helped me to understand why some things are done in the NO the way they are done (such as reading the Collect from the chair).
 
I just believe that everyone should have reside in peace.May God every good one.

Just wanted to point out to any Southerners in Alabama and West of Atlanta, that’s 8am Eastern Time, 7am Central, I think. Might want to check. They generally televise the early morning liturgies at 8am ET (and celebrate them here in Alabama at 7am).

I’m hoping to attend. I did get to go to the Introduction to the Extraordinary Form this past weekend at our Cathedral of St Paul in downtown Birmingham. That was wonderful! I’m still writing up the experience of the Mass and the talks we heard before it, complete with graphics I made based on the diagrams that Fr Nolan drew on the whiteboard during class.

I can see why folks were so upset when the liturgy got trounced in the N.O. Truly a shame. That was the most powerful, beautiful, moving experience I’ve had at Mass since I was received at the Easter Vigil all those years ago. WOW and WOW! I am still in a state of I-don’t-know-what after experiencing the Mass as Heaven on earth. I think I want to read Scott Hahn’s book, The Lamb’s Supper again and savor it. Did I say, WOW yet? WOW!
 
Anyone who saw this mass, what were your opinions. I truly loved it. It however wasn’t the best one have seen on EWTN, but two of EWTN’s regular priests were concelebrants. Fr. Joseph Mary and Fr. Miguel Marie. The TLM is such a wonderful mass. I also like the fact after they do the readings in Latin they do them in English so I can follow both the Vulgate and English Bible

The third concelebrant is also a “EWTN priest”, but I can’t think of his name at the moment. The Sister’s choir sang beautifully.

As usual, I just could not “mentally” connect. And I really did try.
 
I liked it too, but I agree that it wasn’t the best one that they’ve had on there. Do you think it will be replayed at midnight?

It will be replayed at midnight. I checked EWTN’s program schedule. The hardest part I have with the TLM is following along before the Kyrie Elesion

Pretty much always EWTN replays the morning 7am CT-8am - ET Mass also at 11amCT - 12noonET and at 11pmCT - 12midnightET every day. Pretty regularly. It’s something I’ve come to count on and appreciate very much. 🙂 I’m going to have to tape this one tonight and watch it tomorrow. I didn’t get to attend. 😦

(Note: You can also download the homilies (and I think the readings?) from the EWTN audio library. The archive of homilies goes back to 1998. And you can subscribe to the podcasts. Just remember to update weekly, because the podcast only sends out the most recent week or two. If you miss them, you’ll have to go to the site to find them and download them.)

There are no concelebrants in the EF. At a Solemn Mass there is a celebrant, deacon and subdeacon. They may all three be priests, but they are not concelebrants.
 
I didn’t realize it either. There’s so much I’m learning lately. Listening to Fr. Nolan, FSSP, last weekend was really great. He talked about the way it used to be, the way I only ever knew from folks telling me about it or reading old books (I read a lot of old books when I was going through the process and they are still my favorites), and the way it is supposed to be. How to participate in the Mass, what real participation is, what it isn’t (Pope Benedict has written on this too, I’m glad to say), what we’re supposed to be doing at Mass, how it works, what the structure of the church building means (or used to mean, when churches looked like churches, oy ve).

Fascinating talks, even for someone who has read a bunch on the subject, it was fascinating hearing from a priest and not just hearing more of the all-too-usual “I’m Ok, You’re Ok” chatter. (I realize that a lot of people on this forum already know this stuff, but not everybody does.)

Talks on the Mass: What is the Church, What is the Mass, what does it do, what role it plays in salvation, how to receive the extraordinary benefits of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross.
 
Ya know, I just checked that page and it looks like they may not re-broadcast this morning’s service after all. That was live from Hanceville, and it looks like tonight’s broadcast may just be the one from the chapel in Irondale at the EWTN studio. Hmm… Drat.

Oh, well. I want to actually assist at Mass and be there in person. Next time…

Double drat! I got home too late to tape it anyway. Argh!

And before anyone asks couldn’t I just pre-program the VCR, No, I wasn’t home before so I couldn’t set it to tape for me. And yes, I do know how. But I also have an aging father who consistently tunrs off the TV and the DirecTV when he goes to bed…and turns ON the VCR by mistake (it has to be off to record) and does it every time.

I dunno if it’s Alzheimer’s or just a garden variety dementia, all I know is life certainly is interesting these days. I never know what’s going to happen next. Literally, I never know. Life is one giant adventure in the land of the unexpected, unexplained and incomprehensible. Oy ve. 😛
 
Concelebration did not come into existence until the latter sessions of Vatican II Prior to that it did not exist. At the ordination of a priest, the newly ordained did “co-celebrate” the Mass with the bishop, but that was nothing like what we now call concelebration. He knelt at a prie dieu on the pavement and held a lighted candle, whispereing selected prayers with the bishop, but that was it.
