Solomon and Wisdom

What exactly is wisdom? The Bible tells us that no one ever had or would have as much wisdowm as Solomon did. Yet, in the end, he ends up worshipping idols. So was Solomon full of actual wisdom, spritual wisdom or both? Or later in the New Testament, St. Paul tells us we can have all wisdom, but if we don’t have love then we are nothing (okay, paraphrasing there)

Sirach 1:1-8 NAB
All wisdom comes from the LORD and with him it remains forever.
The sand of the seashore, the drops of rain, the days of eternity: who can number these?
Heaven’s height, earth’s breadth, the depths of the abyss: who can explore these?
Before all things else wisdom was created; and prudent understanding, from eternity.
To whom has wisdom’s root been revealed? Who knows her subtleties?
There is but one, wise and truly awe-inspiring, seated upon his throne:
It is the LORD; he created her, has seen her and taken note of her.
He has poured her forth upon all his works, upon every living thing according to his bounty; he has lavished her upon his friends.

Wisdom in the religious sense indicates that a person knows Gods’ ways and his thoughts and desires and judges how to carry this out. An example of Solomon’s wisdom is the time God asked of him what Solomon wanted most. Solomon replied that he wanted wisdom to govern his people and make them a good king. And then Solomon was not only granted this but in addition as a reward for putting himself aside and asking a good for his people, He was granted also great notoriety and riches. That was wisdom.

However wisdom dosen’t give impeccability, and Solomon made some big mistakes later in his life. And this is what Paul was referring to.

Just a little thought about something important.
