As a mom, I must admit how impressed I am with your students! I wish my kids could be in your class. And I think your student might very well be correct, we might be in trouble now.

To be honest, I didn’t like how he asked the people to first pray for him instead of first blessing them. I don’t see it as humility just pandering to the base.
How on earth would you know his motive for doing that?

Here is a man who has just been elevated from being a bishop in an out-of-the-way* place to The Most Important Job in Creation. Talk about fear and trembling!

And I think this was a good way for him to start out. We do notnpray enough for our religious, or even our leaders, religious or secular (governmental). If we spent 1/4 the amount of time praying for them as we do complaining about them, the world would be a better place, altho a 100% change would be much better.
  • I mean this only in the sense that up til now, popes have not been chosen from there. An Italian bishop might not have been quite so surprised.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the Pope is conservative but really? I’m someone who is against Bishops living luxurious lives and having daimond rings because I think it is hypocrital but things like the Lateran palace are places of work and there have been a ton of Popes who still lived simply there like Pius XII and Pius X and Pius V. With all the stuff happening in Church, all it’s history etc… it’s impossible to work in a small seminary as a ton of militant atheists I’ve talked with pretended that the Pope do.
The Pope is the representative of Christ on earth. I don’t think he or any Bishop should live a life of luxury but even living poor like Pius X, Anthony Mary Claret, John Nuemann etc… these guys still showed their authority, didn’t hold back criticizing the enemies of the Church and still attessed that even though as persons they are still human, their authority comes from God and should be obeyed in those matters. All the rubbish articles by the secular media saying that the Church needs to change to their lustful ideals made me want to throw a brick at whoever wrote themfor being so ignorant. They’re not interpreting the Pope’s choice of humble living as a show of Christian virtue, they’re just laughing in our faces. We shouldn’t mind them of course because it’s not like their own perverse ideas are doing any good. I just wish the new Pope will be very strong and work to decrease and convert cafeteria Catholics.
As someone said above, the Papacy is universal. If a Bishop says that homosexuality and their perverse unions are A-OK, uproot him we don’t need him. If someone approves of women Priests, uproot him, deal and concemn all these heresies. It’s the right thing to do as it purifies Church teaching and it is also what devout Catholics want and need. These people need help; we don’t need pandering to the secular world which couldn’t care less about doing the right thing or examaning our own ideals.
Totally agree about the media!

Great answers. Thanks for taking the time to set the record straight for us!

The Catechism tells

**2478 ** To avoid rash judgment, everyone should be careful to interpret insofar as possible his neighbor’s thoughts, words, and deeds in a favorable way

This should be even more true for the Holy Father. Would we go on a social media site and disparage our biological father using our own conjecture, trying to read his heart? Would we do so this with our boss?

Why do some feel this is acceptable with the Vicar of Christ, the man the cardinals choose under the guidance of the Holy Spirit? I noticed Fr. Zuhlsdorf had to shut down his comment sections over this problem.

he won’t teach heresy… not only is he not cut from that stock, we believe the Holy Spirit will protect him from that

My concern isn’t him talking about the glories o abortion out of the blue. It’s him being so insular that he’s not out in the forefront as Pope, instead of just Bishop of Rome

Actually, the secretary to Pope John Paul I said that when he took his pontifical name, he said it was “John Paul I” and they told him that it should just be “John Paul,” because there wasn’t a John Paul II. He responded by saying that there would be a John Paul II shortly, and that he would be much greater than him!

Perhaps we might wait until he’s been Pope for more than 48 hours before we begin judging his humility? Maybe we should take time to get to know him just a bit first?

A questionable story, no doubt invented after John Paul I had passed away. 😉

It’s pretty well documented that he pointed out Wojtyla in some of the General Congregations before he got elected, as his successor.

I tried and to search out both this and the previous claim and found nothing. 🤷

How could someone who hadn’t yet been elected Pope point out his sucessor? And if he was busy building a coalition for Cardinal Wojtyla I’m suprised that JPII wasn’t elected at that conclave.

Read John Paul II’s biography by Carl Bernstein for the anecdote.

Carl Bernstein wrote a biography of Pope Wojtyla. This was mentioned. JP I was a favorite to be elected (it was either the General Congregation prior to his election, or sometime during John Paul I’s brief pontificate that he pointed JP II out as the guy who would lead the Church

I don’t know if that was a fluke in the announcement that simply stuck or if that was Pope John Paul’s choice. We’ll never know, because he was not around long enough to know much about him. I don’t know about anyone else, but I have never heard anyone speak about what happened at the moment of his election. I know that he was called John Paul I, but that was mathematically incorrect. That would be like calling a man John Smith, Sr when there is no John Smith, Jr.
hummm, I wonder if it could have been a prophetic announcement. I can understand why he would be referred to as John Paul I after his successor chose John Paul II because if one were to bring up "John Paul’ in conversation the question would be “John Paul I or John Paul II ?”

Nice

Okey-dokey. I always like to weight the source of these type of statements.
Don’t sell it short because it’s Bernstein. It’s actually quite useful and thorough and written along with a Vaticanista.

I will not sell it short. I will disregard it as irrelevant and unconfirmed. Feel free to give them credence if you trust the man.
