Also, why is it that most Catholic churches I go to…ones that arnt cathedral churches, dont have the Tabernacle out in front. The Anglo-Catholic church I went to did. Just wondering if this was a recent change since im ignorant in Catholic history.

  1. Mary: The veneration and all that I understand, I just want to know where they ideas of the immaculate conception and the assumption actually game from, are they Biblical or did someone just decide thats how it was?
In addition to all the good links above, I recommend reading Mary, the Ark.

Ok cool, thanks, I like the corrilation between circumcision and baptism, I had never even heard of that until several months ago (I was raised in the Church of Christ) so infant baptism is frowned upon anyway, let alone taught about.
Three more questions I had.
  1. Catholic Evangelization: Does this exist? I read about how quickly the church is growing in Africa and other places and was wondering, how do Catholics evangelize?
🙂 What do ya think this discussion is? 😃 Seriously though, there are TONS of ways in which we share our faith. Here’s some links to sites and sources that I personally use.
  1. Coming from an evangelical protestant background I got a good Biblical foundation growing up as a child through the church. Does the Ctaholic church do this for kids growing up in sunday school?]
Yep, especially in our parish. We even have VBS coin’ up in a week or so.

My dear friend Catherine S covers this as well as I could in one of her M&G posts.

Thanks for that, I plan on contiuing to read up on that.

One of the last things I wanted to ask right now was about “lapsed” catholics.

Out of the few Catholics that I really know well, only 3 of them are actually practising, is that very common among Catholics? It seems like there are a good many “lapsed” people out there. Is it just because the church is so big that it makes it seem like there is a lot more? Im wondering bc the parish I go to seats about 500-600 people and its always packed at every service, however if i talk to someone in passing they say they are catholic but never go to church, why is this and what can be done to fix this problem and bring people back to church?
It’s probably about the same as for n-Cs in general. How many such n-Cs do you know who talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk. There are people like that in every faith community, so I don’t know if it’s worth losing too much sleep over. the good news is that after you convert, you can really start to help them deepen their own conversion. Drag 'em to Mass and the sacraments with you and swamp them in prayer and watch the Holy Spirit do the rest.🙂

I was talking with my family yesterday, who are all Church of Christ and verrrrrrry hard to talk to when it comes to this. They were trying to 100% convince me that the Pope, or past Popes had been the anti-chrsit. My question is, how can you be the “anti-christ” when you preach the word of Christ as truth? They were saying something about the 7 hornd and how the pope has a 7 tierd hat…im not exactly sure. But they are not the only people Ive heard that from growing up. Can someone explain why someone would think/believe that?
:rotfl:I’m sorry, that’s just kinda funny because no such thing exists. There is a 3 level crown but that hasn’t been worn in a long time. It also does not have any inscriptions on it as some a-Cs allege.

Yeah, I agree with you. The popes bad days are more holy than the best days of the rest of us I suspect. I mean, how much more “totally committed to Jesus Christ” can one get?

Depends on the church…our parish has it to the right of the altar, while our mission parish has theirs in a special section just inside the church that is designed for adoration. The local cathedral has theirs about in the same place as our parish.

Thank you for all of the help ChurchMilitant! Not that they arnt loving ppl, but I usually take things that people from the COC with a grain of salt…I mean even the Baptists are apostate according to them 😃

I am kind of entering into the “im kind of second guessing my conversion” phase though. I was talking to a friend who went through RCIA, got confirmed, and then later quit going bc no one really followed the doctrines of the church, is this the case everywhere cause I cnt say ive ran into that a lot. This has been a long (3 year) and sometimes frustrating journey to get to where I am now, and im afraid im going to learn something new about the church that is going to send me running and having to look yet again for a new church…but if the Catholic Church is the true one how much farther can I look? Im just really paranoid right now, so please, please pray for me that I will be comforted and my mind will be at ease.

Yeah well, what can ya say? I pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet for such people and I know our Lord will work on them as He sees fit.

Listen my friend. Ever read the parable of the wheat and tares in Matthew 13?
[24] Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field. [25] But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way. [26] And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle. [27] And the servants of the goodman of the house coming said to him: Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? Whence then hath it cockle? [28] And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up? [29] And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it. [30] Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.

Worrying about whether others are going to fall around us as we all seek to follow him is much like soldiers who see comrades fall in battle and either freeze up in fear or break and run away. That’s not the right thing to do. Even if other soldiers desert or break and run does that mean that I should too? Of course not! What is my duty? To encourage others by my actions and follow my commander to achieve our mission.

Letting others discourage me or cause me to fall back or fail is not an option because I alone have to answer to Our Commander for my actions. That’s why we believers are called the Church Militant. We’re “in the thick” here in our lives, right?

If, as I believe it is, the Catholic faith is original, “full gospel” New Testament Christianity, then my only logical response is to join myself to it regardless of the cost. (See Matthew 13:45-46). Remember, I was non-Catholic for over 30 years, and if I wanted easy, I sure as vitam aeternam wouldn’t have come home to the Catholic faith because Protestantism is certainly easier, but nothing…repeat nothing compares to the truth I have discovered. (My Testimony)

I am responsible for my life and response to God’s call for me and by His grace I will follow to the end of my days. Look at a crucifix my friend. Based on what I see there, and read in the Gospels, what other option remains for me? For you?

Whats that old n-C hymn say?

“I have decided…to follow Jesus…no turning back…no turning back.”**

Talk to your friend again… he was “such a good catholic” in judging others that he judged and righteoused his way right out of Catholicism. That doesn’t make sense and it was wrong of him to judge others anyway. God puts us all on our path of spiritual development, and as long as we are open to the grace of the Holy Spirit we will continue to grow and develope in terms of conformation to the will of God as taught through his church. Ultimately, however, while your friend was busy judging the moral “Catholicity” of others, he has inadvertantly tipped his hand by showing that he had the bigger problems with his faith all along… after all, those people who “weren’t really following doctrines” are still in the church where they can receive the sacraments to help them grow closer to God… your friend cannot say the same.

As to your peace of mind, Satan doesn’t want you joining the church. If you are truly convinced, in your conscience, that the church is right, then you should boldly strive forward and push the enemy out of the way of impeding your joining into the Body of Christ.

Thanks promethis, very inspiring words. I know I want to join the church and my heart knows it, but im still somewhat reserved and dnt want to open it up all of the way incase something bad is trying to get in…that may not make sense (again, protestant state of thinking). Are there others who have/had this problem on here?

I had a question about the early Christian heresy’s that the early Church Fathers refuted.
Im a little bit fuzzy of the names but trying to remeber I think they were: Nestorianism, Arminianism, Gnosticism, and others?
My question is, are there denominations of Christianity that still hold to these teachings today, or did these beliefs die out long ago?

There aren’t any groups that can trace themselves back in an unbroken line, but the thing about heresies is they tend to recreate themselves in later generations (which is why we hear about things like Semi-Pelagianism or neo-Nestorians). The Jesus Seminar people are the 20th century version of Gnostics, for example, and groups like Jehovah Witness have taken up a couple of old heresies, that Jesus is not God and so obviously doesn’t have a divine Nature.

But there is no such thing as say the gnostic church, established AD 55, whose adherents are still worshipping today.

When you think that in the 4th century practically the entire Christian world, East and West, were inclined to the more ‘rational’ heresy of Arianism, the fact that a generation later it had GONE from the Church is indeed miraculous --to me a clear sign of the truth of Christianity.

In regards to Nestorianism any denomination that denies that Mary is the Mother of God would be guilty of that particular heresy.
