Music of the Church is truly in my opinion the best method to reaching our Lord. There is nothing in this world that makes me feel more spiritual than listening to some good devotionals, liturgical music as well. Can my Eastern or Latin brothers recommend some beautiful devotionals? I know I cannot understand Arabic, Greek, and some of the other languages of our Churches but even if I cannot understand I know that they’ll have good intent and meaning.

Here are some of my favorites!

I take it “devotional” is the popular Catholic term for paraliturgical type songs? I can never tell with the Indian churches, since even some of the Orthodox ones will have instruments at some point during the liturgy, so for someone who does not speak the language it’s hard to tell what belongs where…

Anyway, some Coptic popular songs (in Arabic):

“Forgive us, our Reedemer” by Boles Malak and some kid: youtube.com/watch?v=M6W2BICWuMY

“Outside your gates, O Jerusalem” by Haidy Montaser: youtube.com/watch?v=8VQIbsNSrEg

Glorification of our great intercessor among the saints HH Pope Kyrillos VI (with English translation in the video): youtube.com/watch?v=2t6HvJWaA9U

Glorification for Amir Tadros (St. Prince Theodore Shatby; I don’t know if this saint is known outside of the Coptic Church, but he is one of the Roman soldier saints who was drawn from Egypt in the time of Diolcetian to fight against the Persians…he eventually rose to the rank of commander, which is why we call him “Amir” in Arabic): youtube.com/watch?v=hoXdlmFvuc8

And a few mezmur (paraliturgical songs) from the Orthodox Tewahedo Christians:

“Bebete Mekdesih” (In your holy temple) by Zemarit Mirtinesh: youtube.com/watch?v=G0A0yrVhRZQ

Mezmur for the Theotokos St. Mary by Dn. Engidawork Bekele: youtube.com/watch?v=ZhSzoeEDwZM

Afan Oromo mezmur “Haallee Luuyyaa” by Dn. Geremu Bayesa: youtube.com/watch?v=DMG676sfqfs (the Oromo language is very different than the Amharic language that the other EOTC songs are in; it is not Semitic, but Cushitic, closely related to the Somali language.)

Thank you Dzheremi for those songs, I will be sure to listen to them! And yes during the Holy Qurbana devotional songs are sung at some point, for Non-Malayalees its hard to tell which is which because both devotionals and liturgical music have a certain tunes playing in the background.
