So-called Ethical Dilemmas are interesting ways of probing for weaknesses, contradictions or gaps in a given person’s morality. Some amount of “working with the problem” is necessary; they’re not intended for “lateral thinking” to try to “break” the problem through finding a superior solution. The whole point of Ethical Dilemmas is that life can serve up situations that are NOT soluble satisfactorily to all involved, thus necessitating a choice be made by the principle actor–in this case, You.

Given the response to the last one, I’ll ask IF YOU’RE NOT REPLYING TO THE POST SERIOUSLY, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING. This is a big forum, go get your own thread.

  1. You can only rescue one of each of the following, which do you save?
    a) A child or an adult
    b) A stranger or your dog
    c) Hitler or lassie
    d) Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate
    e) A dog or a weasel
    f) Your entire family or the entire canine species
    g) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother
    h) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother who just gave you one of his kidneys

    a) A child or an adult Either one, doesn’t matter.
    b) A stranger or your dog Stranger person, I assume. Stranger.
    c) Hitler or lassie I thought you wanted a serious response
    d) Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate Hmmmmm. Wife or egghead. I’ll go with wife.
    e) A dog or a weasel Either one can bite me…I’d leave them both.
    f) Your entire family or the entire canine species If the entire canine species disappeared, I’d be out of a job. 😃
g) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother A bottle with my brother in it?

h) A bottle with the cure for cancer or your brother who just gave you one of his kidneys.

The addition of the kidney to the scenario makes no difference in the question for moi.

OK, I’ll bite.

a - whichever, human life is human life.
b - the stranger. Human life is of greater importance then animal.
c - Hitler. ALL Human life is of greater importence then animal.
d - My spouse. Someone is going to die, I’d rather it be a stranger.
e - don’t matter. I like cats.
f - family. See answers to b and c
g - brother. human life is of greater importance then inanimate objects.
h - the brother again. Even with one less kidney, his life is of greater importance then an inanimate object.

So who or what is on the other end yanking my chain?

Comedians I can handle, jerks I can’t. Maybe the latter will take a hint.

a) either - probably the child though b/c they have their whole life in front of them & are hopefully innocent
b) stranger
c) Hitler - although I’d promptly hand him over to authorities &/or science since he’s been dead so long. They can always find another Lassie
d) My spouse
e) The dog - I’m not too fond of weasels
f) family
g) my brother - hopefully the person who came up w/ the cure for cancer can create another bottle
h) still my brother - same response.

Re *d Your spouse or a Nobel Laureate: * I think the stronger obligation is to spouse/family, but can’t find a source for that.
