I just watched trailers for two anime (Japanese animated) films that looked very appealing. My daughters and I are big fans of Studio Ghibli and always on the lookout for more films of that kind. Unfortunately most anime is either strictly aimed at little kids (think Pokemon) or (more often) trashy with lots of nudity and graphic violence.

Now along comes Studio Ponoc, a new movie company which seems to be staking a place for itself as the “new Studio Ghibli” since the latter has stopped making feature films. Their first film, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is opening in Japan next month. Several trailers have been released and they look really good. I won’t bother to post the URL as you can find them easily on YouTube. No plans have been announced for a U.S. release but it probably won’t happen until next year.

Also I saw a trailer for In This Corner of the World which is being released in these U.S.A. in August. It also has very appealing animation, although the trailer doesn’t give you much idea of the plot. Apparently it’s set during World War II. This seems like it might be a bit reminiscent of Grave of the Fireflies, although the style of the animation suggests that it will be more upbeat.

Thank you for the heads up! I’m a anime fan as well. It is always a challenge finding clean shows. 👍

Since Studio Ghibli was mentioned, I wanted to let y’all know that tomorrow and Monday there will be screenings nationwide in the U.S. of their film My Neighbor Totoro. The Sunday screenings will be dubbed in English, and Monday will be Japanese audio with English subtitles.

Check www.fathomevents.com or Fandango for theaters and showtimes.

This will be the first of a monthly series that goes through November.

👍

Yes, and all the films in the series are excellent. It’s a sort of “best of Studio Ghibli” series. Although my personal favorite, Whisper of the Heart, is not included; but that’s not a well-known film and lacks the elements of fantasy and adventure which mark their most popular work.
