All I have to say is, I can just picture the outraged parishioners tackling the guy 😛 It’s awful what he tried to do, but you know, I would be one of the ones who’d restrain him…

Reminds me of one time during Mass this lady slipped a host into her pocket, but the priest had sharp eyes. He followed her really quickly though she was making swift progress toward the doors, and stood there until she consumed it entirely.

This criminal should have been much harder punished.

**And what criminal law of the USA or State of Florida did he violate–besides the laws regarding battery, theft, and disrupting a religious service?

Be specific.

Like it or not, the Catholic Church has no special privileged position in civil law in the USA as in many countries of Europe.

Nor does any other Church or religion.**

Good for them!

One guy responded
Hey christendom -
So far I’d say the test has been failed.
All you who have bumper stickers saying WWJD … go ahead and answer that question.
Obviously, this guy wasn’t at Mass on Sunday to hear the Gospel reading.

Jesus threw furniture at those who were irreverent in Church, and chased them out with a whip!

I’m very pleased that worshipers were able to prevent a desecration of the Host. That said, I hope we all remember that our Lord prayed for those who tortured and killed him.

I will remember this man in my prayers this evening. Who knows; he may not be evil, but mentally ill or in some state of reduced culpability. Even if he was fully aware of what he was doing, I would much rather see him converted, than punished.

I saw this news article online somewhere under “Weird News: The Communion Wafer Caper.” That was pretty disrespectful.

Not everyone is a Catholic, or respects Catholic tradition. That’s their right.

Isn’t that enough?

Lighten up bub.The respondent was expressing personal outrage, something I concur with.

I, too, am glad he got arrested. But I am afraid that if he does not repent he is in for worse than an arrest. The Host can take care of Himself, quite effectively.

This guy was probably the same person who tried selling a consecrated Host on eBay a few years back…

I’d like to know the “why” as well.

A few weeks ago, there was a strange minor incident at the Basilica in Baltimore. My DW and I and the children were in the front pew. I don’t remember why, but a man in line caught my attention as he approached Father Jeff. Something in his body language maybe. After Father Jeff said this is the body of Christ. The man was unresponsive. Father Jeff repeated himself. The man slowly lifted his hands. Father Jeff placed the host into his hands. As the man started to move off, he made no movement to bring the host to his mouth. Father Jeff quickly took several steps to catch up with him and stopped him with a hand on his elbow. Father Jeff said something I could not hear and waited until he put it in his mouth and chewed before releasing him. Then Father Jeff resumed communion. It was very weird. I’ve never seen anything like it. I assumed this guy was a bit “off” in the head rather than trying to steal a host but who knows.

I should have asked Father Jeff about it outside but I forgot with the usual pleasantries. Father Jeff was our pastor for many years. We go down to the Basilica several times a year to see him and the beautiful Basilica. If anyone visits the Baltimore area, I urge them to come to a service and take the tour. The place is visually awesome. A lot of history there. Depending upon your seat location, the acoustics can be challenging. The website is at baltimorebasilica org.

Yeah, we just don’t know what he had in mind.

Why not kidnapping?

Stealing isn’t a right. Nor is Communion. It’s a Sacrament. You’re right, he doesn’t need to respect the Catholic faith, but doing what he did is not a ‘right.’

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, have mercy on this man, a sinner. Amen.

Fellow Catholics, I ask of you to not show disrespect to this man by gossping about him or trying to ponder his motives. It would be better for you to pray for him and leave the matter in God’s hands. You can rejoice that God’s Justice triumphed - the man was stopped and arrested - but you should also rejoice in His Mercy by praying and making sacrifices for this man’s conversion. God did not bring the news of this man to your attention so that you may gossip, but so that you may rejoice in Him and pray for him.
