Can someone explain this verse to me and the context of previous verses. I was curious about it and the more I research the more bizarre conspiracy theories I find. People really get into the meaning of " sons of God " And the offspring. I have read everything from super natural beings as being the offspring and that the " sons of God" were anything from angels to demons.

Genesis 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

From the footnote in the New Jerusalem Bible:
The author of Genesis is using a popular story of a race of giants, the nephilim, born of the union between gods and mortals. While not presenting this story as a myth nor delivering judgement on its actual occurance, the author is using the story to serve as an example of the increase of human wickedness which provokes the flood. The earliest ecclesiastical writers identify the “sons of god” with the fallen angels. From the fourth century onwards, the church fathers commonly take the “sons of god” to be Seth’s descendants and the “daughters of men” those of Cain. In St Augustine’s work “The City of God” he traces the kingdom of God back to Seth and the kingdom of the devil to Cain. Thus, Augustine sees in Genesis 6:1-4 the sons of the kingdom of God having intercourse with the daughters of the kingdom of the devil which wickedness provoked the flood.
 
If they can come up with strange theories based on that verse, then what about Psalm 82:
God presides in the great assembly;
he renders judgment among the “gods”:
…]
“I said, ‘You are “gods”;
you are all sons of the Most High.’
But you will die like mere mortals;
you will fall like every other ruler.”

Christ taught us that God was referring to men:
he called them gods, to whom to word of God was spoken, and the scripture cannot be broken

Thus, in the psalm like in the other parts of the Scriptures, they are “gods” but not literally, and they are “sons of the Most High”, but not literally.

Though there is no doubt that from the spiritual point of view, every soul is created by God at conception…no wonder then that our beloved Jesus said: “I am returning to my Father and your Father”, He who alone is “the one and only son of God” (Jn 3:16, Apostles’ Creed), the “Filium Dei Unigenitum” (Nicene Creed)!

What I have read about this is from St. Augustine (c. 400 ad) “The City of God”. In it, he explains that the “giants” were actually gigantic men over 3.5 feet high that used to live on Earth prior the flood in Noah’s time. He even emphasized that during his time he personally saw a gigantic tooth of human origin as well as there were stories of people finding gigantic human bones and that he was happy because that would prove the race of gigantic men to people in the future. As far as the Men of God and daughters of men ( he feels the author was alluding to the descendant’s of Seth, (sons of God) and the descendants of Cain (daughters of man) as Cain decided to follow the ways of man and Seth the ways of God.

It seems to me this is more plausible that the race :shrug:of fallen angels having sex with women.
