Hello there, everyone!

I am posting this in the Traditional Catholic forum because I could not find any other appropriate area.

To get to the point, I and several aquintances are currently working on a plan for a Catholic discussion forum with a European orientation. For quite some time now we have felt that due to the nature of most Catholic discussion forums on the 'net, they tend to be more American dominated and I for one, feel a little out of place.

We believe in the need for a European Catholic forum to discuss important issues concerning the Church in European society – politics, current events, culture, etc. – and a forum where there is a greater focus on a closer-knit community of European Catholics which is hard to attain on most forums due to the American-predominance. There will also be particular emphasis on national-language sub-forums for discussions in European languages - German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish etc.

I hope this isn’t taken as a slant towards Americans – or Catholic Answers – but I am sure my fellow Europeans may understand where I am coming from.

Anyway, right now we’re really stumbling on a name for this forum. We have decided we would like the name to be in Latin. We have several reasons for this, first, a need for an inclusive name for all Europeans – as I mentioned the multi-lingual emphasis – and secondly because of the rich and historic tradition of Latin in the Church.

Our stumbling block is… none of us really have a good understanding of Latin :o. That is where we could use your help.

We are looking for Latin translations of Catholic Europe and (the) European Catholic. We are also open to suggestions, if you believe you may have a better name. We again, are also looking to have a “motto” translated into Latin… Body of Catholic Faithful or Body of European Catholic Faithful depending on the final result of the translation.

Any help will be much appreciated, and if any of my European brothers and sisters are interested further in this forum - drop me a PM. This will be for all European Catholics!

Many Thanks,
Jon Paul

Hey, I have an idea! How about a worldwide Catholic forum… entirely in Latin, the language of the Church! That would be awesome, especially once everyone got used to it!

In the meantime: I’m rusty, but I’m pretty sure your answers would be: Catholicus Europae (The Catholic of Europe = The European Catholic) and Europa Catholica (Catholic Europe).

Body of Faithful Catholics = Corpus Catholicorum Fidorum
Body of Faithful Catholics of Europe = Corpus Catholicorum Europae Fidorum

Latin didn’t really do capital letters, at least, not in the period I studied, so you can probably mess around with that. Word order is also flexible.

Anyone who really knows Latin should correct me, because I really am keenly aware of how rusty I am and how wrong I might be with this.

You might try the [group=26]Latin lately (Speak latin, or want to)[/group] Catholic Answers Group.

I am afraid the literal translations are not very interesting. But on the other hand they are easily recognizable to non-Latin speakers.
  • Catholic Europe - Europa Catholica
  • European Catholic - *Catholicus Europaeus *(masculine gender by default)
  • Rather than *Body of the Catholic Faithful *I would suggest *Body of the Christian Faithful *since a ready-made word exists, as used in John Paul II’s Apostolic Exhortation: Christifideles Laici.
Body of the European Christian Faithful - *Christifideles Europi *[or: *Europaei
(I suppose you might try coining a word for either of the above, *Catholicifideles)

Body of Faithful Catholics of Europe = Corpus Catholicorum Europae Fidorum
The word order on the latter just looks wrong – I would say Corpus Catholicorum Fidorum Europae. You could also substitute *Fidelum *for *Fidorum *in either one, if you want a different sound.

Latin might be the language of the Roman Church, but it’s not the language of the entire Catholic Church, which is bigger than just the Latin Church.

When you launch this, could you post here, for us posters that speak more than one language?

I apologise for having taken my time to reply, but I’ve been quite busy lately, but anyway, thank you all for your comments and aid :)!

Many Thanks,
Jon Paul
