Some questions about Bible translations

I’ve also heard that the NIV has a definite Protestant ‘slant’ to it. Too bad. It was my Bible of choice back when I was attending protestant churches.

I’m one of those odd ducks that actually like the NAB. So shoot me. I find it easy to understand, although it’s true that it’s not very poetic and kind of clunky. I also really enjoy the RSV-CE. The DR is beautiful to read but I have to admit I’m probably missing a lot of the meaning for focusing so hard on the words.

There is a reason why to focus hard on words, example:

But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”

The NAB translation puts Blessed Mary in the same position as Zechariah, doubt. The footnotes even say this.

[20] You will be speechless and unable to talk: Zechariah’s becoming mute is the sign given in response to his question in v 18. When Mary asks a similar question in ⇒ Luke 1:34, unlike Zechariah who was punished for his doubt, she, in spite of her doubt, is praised and reassured(⇒ Luke 1:35-37).

She never was doubtful if the Incarnation can take place. She simply asked, out of curiosity, how will it be done since the natural way of having a child was not an option to her.
