Ok, so im a new “convert” to the Church. (I say “convert” because im not baptized yet, but will be next Easter…but ive converted in my heart). Anyways, I’ve started to go to Tridentine Masses and LOVED IT!
(im 17 keep in mind) Anyways, i was just wondering, what is the general consensus among others on the Tridentine mass compared to that of Paul VI???
Any replies would be great

Being also 17 and also a convert (baptised last year though) who also attends TLMs when possible, i might suggest that this would be better suited to the ‘Traditional Catholicism’ forum? It can be a fine line though so, yeah.

Consesus? What do you mean? You will find that most Catholics don’t even know it exists, and in my experience with those who do, it is usually very polarized. There are older folks who love the ritual of their childhood, and older folks who were part of the movement to change it, young people who love it, hate it, etc. Undeniably, however, it is growing and expanding. In my own area, for example, even 3 years ago when I started attending Catholic churches I would never have dreamed that our Archbishop would be participating in a Traditional Mass within a few years (next month I tihnk).

Good luck and welcome btw 👍 Be careful not to hold on to merely the feelings you have after baptism…they go away quicker than you think. I almost stopped going to church entirely a few times recently, around the 1 year anniversary of mine.

There’s nothing wrong with the Extraordinary form.

There’s nothing wrong with the Ordinary Form.

I personally prefer the Byzantine.

There can be problems with the way any of the authortized Liturgies of the Church get celebrated, however.

Just a reminder, everyone, that no denigration of any rite of the Church is allowed in the Liturgy and Sacraments forum–otherwise, feel free to express your preferences. Thank you all. 🙂

In my opinion the Ordinary Form gets a bad wrap. If it is done properly it is reverent and beautiful and doesn’t in any way ruin the sacrifice of the Mass. The Ordinary Form is just that, the ORDINARY Form and I think it should be treated as such.

There is no denying that many people took Vatican II the wrong way and there is still evidence of the abuse of what Vatican II really stood for. But the blame for these abuses should not be placed on Vatican II, or the Ordinary Form, but rather on those who misinterpret and misunderstand the rubrics and reasoning of the Ordinary Form. If one reads the concicular and post-concicular documents of Vatican II it is easy to see that the real Vatican II is a reverent and beautiful contemplation on the Church and its liturgy.

Now the people who celebrate the Extraordinary Form are much less likely to abuse the liturgy because they understand the inherent reverence of the Eucharist so naturally the Tridentine Mass is free from abuses and, becuase of its many elements and rubrics is seems more reverent.

In my opinion, the reality is that when the Ordinary Form of the Mass is celebrated properly it is just as reverent as just as beautiful. I also think that the amount of grave abuse is grossly exaggerated. In thousands of parishes all over the world the OF is celebrated properly and reverently. This is not to say that the places where the OF is abused should be ignored, rather, we should strive to celebrate the Ordinary Form (after all it is the Ordinary Form) properly so that these abuses will go away and more people will understand the necessity for reverence and respect for the rubrics.

In short, the OF is not going to go away so I think we should embrace it and ensure that it is respected.

I suspect the consensus you will get is that there is no consensus. My take on things is that the Ordinary form of the Mass attracts all kinds of people with all kinds of preferences. The Extraordinary form attracts, well, extraordinary people. That will likely be the case regardless of what is is considered “ordinary” and what is considered “extraordinary”.

In my personal opinion, the Extraordinary form does a better job of expressing the sense of mystery, timelessness, and “other-worldliness” of the Mass. The ordinary form does a better job of making people feel like they are supposed to be participating. Those are both feelings rather than objective realities. Both forms can be executed reverently and both can be executed irreverently.

Indeed, these are the qualities about each form that attract the people who attend them to them. I (subjectively, I don’t mean it’s objectively “better” or that it “makes better juju” or anything) prefer the EF for the reasons you listed - mystery, timelessness, and otherworldliness. However, other people may (subjectively) prefer the OF because they view it as easier to understand what happens there. Although, unfortunately, many people have closed themselves off from the EF without trying it because it is in Latin and they figure it will be completely incomprehensible.

To the OP, I am 14, and there are many people like us who are young and prefer the EF. Maybe someday it will be said in every parish just as Pope Benedict has expressed his wishes.

Many of the abuses that are brought up in this forum are things that I have never seen in 24 years. I attend the Ordinary Form, and I find it very worshipful.

I agree. I travel some (not tons) for work and have been to Mass in many different US cities and have not once see the sorts of egregious things folks talk about. I do believe that they can exist, but I don’t think the constistancy of the abuses cataloged is actual.

All that being said, I prefer to attend Mass in my own parish although I do attend a First Friday EF Mass. Recently there was a visiting FSSP priest there and the way he said Mass was much more reverant than the priest who normally says it who is a bit rushed and choppy.

I have never been to a Tridentine Mass, but I have seen videos and think it is a beautiful Mass just like the Mass of Paul VI if it is done properly. I also like the Divine Liturgy .

I’m 23 and have been attending the extraordinary form (Tridentine Mass) since high school.

Young people are FLOCKING to the extraordinary form because it often is accompanied by excellent catechesis and maintains a sense of mystery and sacredness better (in my opinion) than the ordinary form.

I’m glad yet another young person will be filling our ranks! Welcome!

I am a recent revert, having been away from the Church for over 30 years. The NO Mass was just getting going when I last attended. What I grew up with is what today is called the EF. I have been to church in 3 parishes, in 3 different cities since I came back and all used the NO mass and it was done beautifully, and reverently. There is only one place in my diocese where the EF is celebrated on Sunday and it conflicts with the bible study I attend at my parish to refresh and increase my newly remembered faith, so I have not been yet. I do intend to go but I doubt it will be more that an occasional venture as I am otherwise involved with the parish.

The EF had the advantage that no matter where you went in the world, the Mass was the same. You might not understand the Homily, but the Mass was in the same language as you went to at home. That is no longer the case. In my parish alone, there are masses in three different languages.

Hope it’s OK for a 40-something to weigh in 🙂
I converted last year and was immediately drawn to the EF. The only parish that offers it in our archdiocese is within reasonable driving distance for us, but just far enough away to make it difficult to make it our home parish. So we go every couple of months.

At my home parish where only the OF is offered, we recently got a new pastor. Our old one was pretty conservative, but the new guy is wonderful. He is using more Latin and traditional music in the liturgy and is encouraging us to do things like stay after mass for prayers. It’s wonderful! But today, I went down the EF parish. I needed confession and they offer it before mass while my home parish does not. I was amazed, yet again, at how beautiful the EF is, and how it really does have a transformative effect. It feels like time is suspended, somehow.

Things are changing for the better here, it seems. Una Voce is now active in the archdiocese, and with a new pastor at my home parish who is friendly to Latin and more traditional practices, I may get up the courage to request an EF mass at my home parish. That would be great if that could happen.

Wow thanks guys. Sorry , i prolly wasnt clear, but i have 0 problems with the OF, and do enjoy it when it is celebrated reverently. It’s also really interesting to see how many people my age like the EF…im not so weird after all ^^

Hi, 🙂

I’m 23 and I’m a convert too, and I love the Tridentine Mass. 👍
I usually go to the OF Mass cause I live sort of far from the EF parish, and I like it there too, - I mean, it’s all about the Eucharist, and I have no problems with a well done OF… but I find the Latin Mass has a special type of reverence and silence that’s just really beautiful and lifts our hearts and minds to God.

I’m 16 and I prefer the Tridentine Mass also. We’re trying to get it at my parish.

The consensus is most likely that it is bad. This is because either people didn’t grow up with it, wanted to change it in the early 70s, or do not understand it. Also, many people don’t even know what it is. It is simply NOT the Ordinary Form anymore. The Mass of Paul VI is, and will probably stay that way for many decades to come.

The best thing you can do is try to get it in your parish.
