This seems like the appropriate place to post this. As a lot of you know, I am a high school student. I am extremely active in my school’s model United Nations program. For those of you who do not know what this is, it is sort of like debate except your simulating the UN, you go to big colleges for the events called conferences.)

Tomorrow I will be representing the Vatican for a weekend long conference. I have been looking everywhere for quotes from Popes and Vatican officials on the eradication of WMD and land mines, and similar topics that would fall under social justice. Can anyone point me to a good source? I know the church’s positions, I just need some quotes to back them up.

Here are some places to start.

USCCB Catholic Campaign to ban landmines.
usccb.org/sdwp/international/landmine/brochure.shtml

Series of articles from the USCCB regarding nuclear weapons and other “war and peace” issues.
usccb.org/sdwp/international/nuclear.shtml

The 1999 address by Papal Nuncio to the UN on the topic of landmines.

A 2003 address by Msgr. Francesco Cao Minh-Dung supporting the Ottawa Convention for the total elimination of landmines.

A 2004 address by Archbishop Silvano Tomasi on the topic of landmines.

The 2004 address to the UN by Msgr. Celestino Migliore regarding landmines, WMD and general issues of war and peace.

The 2006 address to the UN by Msgr. Celestino Migliore on terrorism.

I hope this give you a good starting point.

Here is something else you can do.

Go to the Vatican website, www.vatican.va, choose your language, then in the Search box in the upper right, just type “landmines”, “WMD”, “Nuclear” etc. You will get a good deal of information.
