I’m not sure if this is the right forum. Somebody correct it isn’t. So, I’ve been lurking here for a long time and read a lot of threads on hot-button sex issues. And, I cannot help but wonder, why do people act like or think that sex is an inalienable human right? Maybe I’m just young and stupid, but, when people make a fuss over it, it sounds the same to me like people making a fuss over cake. I never had sex, but, I guess it’s nice and cake is nice, but, there is more to life than cake. I don’t know I’m just confused. I’m just surprised nobody has petitioned for an amendment to be made in the Constitution to guarantee a right to sex in order to shut up the opposition on gay marriage, abortion, etc.

They didn’t have to once the Supreme Court manufactured the right to privacy out of the Fourth Amendment, then began to fall all the laws against sexual immorality.

Sex is like a drug. A very addictive one. Like having tasted the best chocolate in the world and then having it kept from you unless you do certain things in a certain way. It becomse its own point of fascination. I don’t know how else to say.

As someone once said, there is no right to sex. Rights imply an obligation on someone else’s part. If there were a right to sex, someone would be able to demand sex from someone else!

The problem is that the current culture has made sex equivalent to life itself, so that everybody thinks they are “missing out” if not “sexually happy.” CS Lewis wrote this issue up beautifully just before his death in 1963.

Can you provide a link or a title for CS Lewis? Sounds like something I’d like to read.

Why isn’t it treated like any other drug? One could argue that sexual addiction and misuse has caused more damage than alcoholism and other drug-addiction combined. However, it is a problem not talked about often or at least not viewed as problematic.

Because it’s not something that can be regulated; no breweries, distilleries or meth-labs; no more than the consensual use of two bodies. Indeed, there is nothing more basic.

I understand that, but, people can at least acknowledge that sexual misuse /addiction is bad and damaging even if there is no way it can be regulated. But, I remember someone posted a letter on CAF of a woman to her father on how his porn use hurt her. The article got a lot of hostile comments saying that she had the problem, not her dad.

There are 12-step groups for sex addiction, and one can seek counseling for it too. The treatment in many cases is similar to treatment for other addictions.

Lots of people scoff even at the idea of alcohol or drug addiction, and laugh at those who try to stay clean and sober.

It is not treated as any other drug because sex is essential to the survival of the human race, drugs are not. The addiction, however, can be similar, and just as devastating that is true. But sex cannot be outlawed, only an attempt to regulate it can be done, but never has that been totally successful. It is part of our makeup and the vast majority of us engage in it, unlike drugs, which are not innate to the human body, and necessary for survival.

God Himself created the sexual urge to be so strong so that we would procreate. However, He did not intend for us to have uncontrolled sexual appetites. He intended for us to use our sexual urges to form stable relationships (marriage) where the offspring of the union would be safe and protected and able to mature and grow. We are sinful human beings who have misused sex and all the other wonderful gifts God has given us to survive and flourish.

Okay, I guess the whole sex as a drug thing has been pointless. Alright, I got an article out of this thread that can possibly serve me well. There has been one thing that has been bothering me. I’m part of a pro-life group and we have been discussing things like disabilities, helping new moms, boycotting the “R” word, etc. But, we never talk about sex and, I for one do not believe we can eliminate the scourge of abortion if we do not change society’s attitudes toward sex. Now, I am wondering what am I going to say if I’m talking to someone about why abortion is wrong and they ask, “what about sex?” Naturally, I would respond, “what about it?” Now, I have never heard of anyone being so base as to say that abortion can’t be wrong because it would mean he/she cannot go around having sex anytime, anyplace. I would certainly acknowledge some people will need to amend their way of life to avoid this evil. But, if it is truly a life at stake, one needs to do it even if he or she does not like it. Slave owners did not like having to free their slaves and trying to figure out how to run their plantations without them, but, emancipation had to come. I don’t know, I feel like if I express my attitudes towards casual sex, I would get in trouble with the group for bad PR. But, these issues go together.

Right to free speech. No obligation on someone else’s part.
Right to bear arms. No obligation on someone else’s part.
Freedom of religion. No obligation on someone else’s part.

etc.

In all three cases, no one else has to cooperate with you, they just have to not stop you.

But sex, except for the “m word”, requires the cooperation of another.

No one is required to participate. You’ve dug the hole, please stop digging.

By “R word,” are you referring to a certain sexual felony that may result in abortion?

If so, why can’t they just say it?

I think the OP means the term “retard” as a slur against disabled people. Its use professionally has diminished quite a lot, and the term seems to be going the way of “the n word,” once common but now taboo.

The first week of March is dedicated by some group to spread awareness that using the word retard is demeaning. I was not talking about rape.

Sex is very powerful. God made us sexual beings, and He made sex good, and sacred. We distort it. Because it is so good, there is potential for great distortion. Those facts go a long way in explaining the fascination with it. There is a very real appetite for it.

On the other hand, I believe St. Thomas Aquinas said that someone who isn’t well experienced with spiritual delights will very often substitute with sexual ones. It might have been St. Augustine, but I think it was Aquinas. That should indicate how important sexuality is to God.

You’re absolutely correct that the fight against abortion must necessarily involve our attitudes about sex. I’ve run into it again and again. Moreover, it means people need to encounter Christ in a powerful way.
