Some thoughts on a Diocesian Symposium

I just attended last week a Diocesian Symposium based on the Year of the Apostle Paul. Over all it was very good and very informative. The keynote speaker was really good and had a great way of helping me to understand how Soteriology, the Incarnation, the cross all interplay together in the christian life. Actually quite inspiring. Starting with Jesus not thinking equatility with God something to be grasped (clearified by the word exploited) but emptied himself. Not diminishing his God hood but by becoming like us through love redemes by lifting man up. Very similar to St. Thomas Aquinas introduction to the Summa Theologica saying a similar thing. His discussion really Made me take a second look a substitutionary Atonement. Which was then complimented by a young priest who reviewed same issues with a study of Galatians. I wish I had the speaker’s trascripts of his speach so I can review it again in more detail. But the preist also had a great review from his thesis While at the Gregorian University in Rome. I must ask him for a copy of it. Overall. Very Good and Challenged me greatly and I deffinately will pick up their referrals on the studies of Pauls teaching.

Actually I wanted to compare The RCC view with the Protestant view with regards to Soteriology and Substitutionary atonement. Also I am a non catholic and do not think that I can post on the other areas of this site.

Up until recently I heald the Soterilogical view that equates salvation with Justification. However, after reading the CCC my view has changed that more inclusive of the whole christian experience. What the Key note speaker says that there is an element of this but it actually goes beyond this starting at the Last supper. Man I wish I had his notes so I can be a little more specific.
So, my soteriological view is changing currently though for many years the above was true for me. Now the question is this is Substitutional Attonment in adiquate to describe what happen during the Passion of our Lord?

Excellent question, and one that I am not really ready to answer, as I have neither thought about it or studied it. I know that the Orthodox do not consider it valid as an approach, and the CAtholic Church has it as a part.

AS to the first part, Catholics understand that Justification and Sanctification are not the exact same thing. To that end, we must be Justified to be Sanctified and if we are not Sanctified, we cannot be saved.
