For Mary ever to have had sexual relations with anyone following the conception of Jesus would mean that Jesus had an adulterous for a mother, an unthinkable consideration for anyone who calls himself a Christian. While the foster father of Jesus passed from this life, God the Father has never ceased to exist in His natural state. No true Christian would ever believe that the brothers and sisters referred to in Scripture were anything other than near relatives – probably either first or second cousins.

I’ve heard the argument put better but it remains part of the reason I hold to a belief in her perpetual virginity.

God did not actually have sexual intercourse with Mary. He placed the seed in her womb, but there was no “relations”, or else she would not be a virgin.

Therefore, if she had relations with Joseph, she would not be considered an adulteress. She was betrothed to Joseph at the time, which in ancient and middle times was as serious as the marriage itself.

Mark me, I’m not saying that she did, I’m just pointing out that the claim that such activities would have made Mary an “adulteress” are erroneous and I think, a little insulting to the Blessed Mother.
