From his 1918 essay “Lincoln and Free Speech.”

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
 
I love Teddy Roosevelt! One of my four favorite historical figures of the 20th century (General Douglas MacArthur, Pope St. John XXIII, and Babe Ruth being the others).

Roosevelt came from tremendous privilege, yet his compassion for the common man was UN-common (see the “Square Deal”). There isn’t a politician anywhere who couldn’t learn very much from this great man. VASTLY underrated by history, and we could use someone like him today…
