I’m not a Catholic yet, though I desperately want to become one. Certain circumstances in my life inhibit me from joining the church any time in the near future. I’m going through alot right now, and I need some assistance badly. About four months ago, when I decided I wanted to join the church someday, I discovered mortal sins. I decided to turn around my life and stop. This didn’t come so easily. I found myself addicted to them, and I haven’t been able to stop no matter how hard I try. Worse, I can’t go to confession, meaning they can’t be forgiven. And as far as I understand, if you die with any unforgiven mortal sin, you go to hell for eternity. All I want in my life now is forgiveness. But I can’t get it. I want to turn around so badly. Can anyone help? Please?

You need to learn how to help yourself from the inside out. First, go talk to a Parish Priest in your neighborhood. Priests are trained and can give you some support and advice. Forgiveness is part of the process, and you need to forgive yourself and move forward following the ten commandments of God.

Here’s why. I’m 15 years old. We are nondenominational. I can’t just go up to my parents with a smile on my face and say, “Hey! Let’s all go to confession today!” That’s just not going to happen. Second, i’ve lived in my neighborhood all my life and I don’t even know my next door neighbors. I have like 3 friends total.

Do you live in town? Do you have a parish in walking distance? I think you’re old enough to go on your own (I did at your age); I think your parents would understand your curiosity in the Church (most nondenominational parents can be flexible about their children’s spiritual journey, in my experience).

Peace be with you and welcome to our faith community! It is UNREPENTED mortal sin that you should be worrying about, and it sounds like you have repented, but now need help in avoiding these sins in the future. You need grace for that; start by developing a regular prayer life, and even if you are not Catholic, you can still attend Mass. A good priest will also help your journey. 🙂

moo5009, I can understand your situation now. Catholic1954 has a goood suggestion. (Just don’t take communion if you do go to Mass.) You will be in the real presence of Christ. Ask God for forgiveness. He will give it to you.

If your parents won’t let you go, obey them. You’ve being very good about obeying them. 👍 Do start to pray, however. My favorite prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed by thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day, our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil. Amen.

Yes there is actually. But the problem is that I rarely ever go outside. I don’t want to just sneak off somewhere. And no, they wouldn’t understand.

This question may sound a bit silly or overdramatic, but I have a severe anxiety disorder and I can’t help but wonder, if I were to die right now, what would happen to me? I’d actually like a truthful answer to this.

Pray. Pray, pray, pray! The Lord will hear you and answer your prayers. If you want forgiveness, He will give it freely. Remember what Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Believe on Him and you will be saved!

moo5009 please do not worry!!!
You are not a catholic yet and so have not been taught and dont know when/what exactly a sin is yet.You have not deliberatley and knowingly (with all the knowledge required)sinned. For example a person on another thread was worried they had had an abortion in the past and was worried she wouldnt be able to become a catholic.Yes abortion is killing and a sin but she was not a catholic at the time and wasnt fully aware, when she gets baptised her sins will be washed away.
Please try not to worry my 19yr old son has suffered with panic attacks/anxiety disorder since 12/13yrs old.I know how awful it is for you.I myself have suffered panic attacks for years but after lots of counselling and learning as much about it as possible mine have stopped for 10yrs now!!My son has been free of panic attacks for nearly 3yrs.When he was your age he was at his worst. He used to worry about me/his dad dying.
God loves you and only HE knows whats in your heart.Talk with God in your mind tell him how sorry you are for whatever sins you think you are / have committed.Say an Act of Contrition…O my God because Thou art so good,i am very sorry for having sinned against You,and by the help of Thy grace i will try to never sin again.
Dear Lord I renounce all my sins and i humbly beg Your forgiveness
Lord in Your mercy hear my prayer

All sins can be forgiven…
At the moment i understand how difficult it is for you to attend Mass. One day you will be able to so dont worry. You are NOT going to die in sin you are not a catholic yet you are a minor(a child still in Gods eyes) so you are not bound or even aware of the churchs teachings/laws.Talk to God pray to Him He will forgive you anyway a perfect act of
contrition.I will keep you in my prayers. You may contact me anytime if you think i could help or re-assure you any more. You are a lovely young person whom God loves.
God Bless

But I thought confession was the only way mortal sins could be forgiven. Isn’t that what the church teaches? 🤷

Confession is only for baptised catholics you can do an act of contrition " apersonal confession" for yourself to alleviate any fears you may have until you become a catholic
God Bless

Oh and by the way if you were to die right now you would go to heaven you are an innocent
God Bless

Are you a baptized christian? (Baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…)

If not, does your non-denom assembly offer it? (Not all do and many that do wait until kids explicitly desire it and can articulate why) Believe it or not, the catholic church fully recognizes baptisms of most christian denominations as totally valid and sacramental. Better yet, baptism washes away ALL your sins, mortal and otherwise committed prior to the baptism (presuming your repentence, of course).

If this is the case, you may not need to confront your parents yet: ask to be baptized as a christian believer.

But if you take this route, take God up on His Grace fully because the next time you have genuinely mortal sin on your soul, you should get to confession.

God bless!

Time for Plan B then.

Perhaps try to contact one of the Catholic Answers priest affiliates online and ask advice of him directly. You’ve got a tricky road to navigate and need a wiser partner than me!

How would I contact one?

Submit a question under the ‘ask an apologist’ forum and specifically ask for Fr. Serpa in the title. That should work for starters.
