I’ll paste what He said here

Wrong , the Roman Catholic Church was established 313 ad , so after a few hundred years of killing millions of Christians then the Romans passed a law to tolerate Christianity and it then became the state religion Christians and Jewish converts flocked to The Roman Church as they were promised to be kept safe from persecution, a few hundred years go by and the Roman Catholic Church wanted to do things not biblical like praying to Mary and giving glory to other people then God , People Then rejected the Roman Catholic Church
Catholic just meant universaly agreed , so jews and gentiles
who were Christian had a common ground and then in 313 ad Romans started to get involved and it became The Roman Catholic Church then many who were Jews and gentiles left the Roman Catholic Church

But in a sense yes I’m catholic but it doesn’t mean what you think it means , Roman Catholic and a Catholic are two different things

I don’t have a label I just believe the bible , but this implies That Jesus started the Roman Catholic Church , which he never he started Christianity and it also implies Jesus condones what roman Catholics do Which HE DOES NOT , “i am the Lord that is my name and I will never give my Glory to another”Catholic Church ain’t the true church of god And u said u can’t go by traditions alone the bible says 1 Corinthians 4:6 don’t go beyond what is written 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. You have taken out context and the transitions was to have faith in Jesus and follow there explain which match the word of god taught by the apostles ur teachings completely contradict gods word

Btw I didn’t say you can’t go by traditions alone I said you can’t go By the bible alone because he believes in sola scriptura

It would be helpful to know what he was responding to. As far as he responded ‘wrong’ . And then went on to give his version of events re the Council of Trent and Emperor Constantine.

I posted on my Facebook that the Catholic Church is the one true church of Jesus And was founded by Jesus himself and that’s what he was responding to

Rosie,

Here’s the game that he’s playing: usually, folks who make these sorts of claims are either attempting to refute historical and Scriptural facts (“oh, Jesus never intended to start a church! The Romish did that on their own, as something different than what Christ wanted, in the 4th century!”), or they’re playing fast and loose with their description. It looks like the guy you’re quoting is doing the latter.

His claim is that “the Catholic Church” didn’t start until Constantine made it “his” church. So, before that time, there was ‘pure’ Christianity, and after that time (and for 1200 years), there was only “man-made” Catholicism.

His critique also makes some assertions that aren’t true to historical fact:
  • “in 313ad Romans started to get involved”: umm… there’s literally a book in the Bible “to the Romans”. There were Roman Christians from the beginning; they didn’t “start to get involved” in Christianity in the 4th century.
  • “in 313ad … it became the Roman Catholic Church.” Not true. The word ‘catholic’ – meaning “universal” – had been in use as a descriptor of the Church since at least the early 2nd century. We have texts from Ignatius of Antioch and about the martyrdom of Polycarp in which the term “Catholic” appears. The use of the term “Roman Catholic” – to describe the Church in the West – began to be used to distinguish from the Church in the East (the Orthodox Church). However, that’s a much later development, per se, and tends to be associated with events that occurred much later, once the capital of the empire was no longer Rome!
  • “many who were Jews and gentiles left the Roman Catholic Church”: this is a gross mischaracterization. Let’s face it – people have always turned away from Christ and His Church. We see people walking away from Jesus in the Gospels. We read the letters of John, in which he’s already alluding to the Gnostics and their false teachings. It’s happened throughout all history. However, to make the assertion that people left because “Romans started to get involved” is just beyond the pale. It’s an accusation that has no substance or fact.
He also says “I don’t have a label I just believe the bible”. Is that what Jesus did? Did He give us a Bible and tell us “read and follow this”? No… Jesus gave us a Church and gave it the task of following Him and making disciples. If this guy throws away the Church that Jesus founded, then he’s not “believing the bible”, as he claims.

While I agree that Christianity grew exponentially after Constantine ended the persecution of Christians…it wasn’t made the official religion of the Roman Empire until much later…most of that post goes completely against what historians know happened in that era.

He needs some serious historical Christian history lessons. Thank him for his time and be on your way. His agenda isn’t to inform you.

I was reading about Christianity on the internet and common questions would pop up. One question was when the Catholic church started. To my horror, the answer given was Constantine started the Catholic
Church!!! Catholics know Peter was the first Pope so the Catholic Church was already in existence before Constantine.
Yes, he made Christianity legal, but there was already an early church and Catholic
theology in place. Of course, councils continued to meet and theology and beliefs
were clarified, but Constantine did not
invent theCatholic Church.
This is why they say we should not believe
everything we read on the internet!

If you ask Siri he says Jesus founded the Catholic Church

And if you ask Siri who founded other churches he gives the name of men

The Catholic Church was founded by a Martian who landed in a spaceship in Rome in the year 356. This Martian :alien: used his advanced technology to trick the Romans and started this new fake religion that went on to murder ten trillion septillion innocent real Bible Christians. Truth!
I demand you refute the above! Aha! You can’t. So I’m right and you’re wrong.

…no different from the OP. Why do you even feel the need to address absurd anti-historical fantasies of some random internet guy? Point him towards secular history sources. A reading of the early Church Fathers, in the second and third centuries, will demonstrate how Catholic their theology was.

I’ve heard this all the time from Protestants, but it’s more complicated than that.

We are the Catholic Church. It’s as simple as that. The term “Roman Catholic” was started by English Protestants during the Reformation to disparage Catholics who remained loyal to the Pope. Over time, it has become an acceptable term for Catholics and the Catholic Church.

So this person is being a little disingenuous when using the term Roman Catholic. There’s just one Catholic Church, not a Roman Catholic Church and a not-Roman Catholic Church.

@Rosie11 Three cheers for Siri! The Wikipedia articles on Catholicism and Christianity usually stink, stank, stunk! They’re irritating beyond all get-out! 😡

He’s now said why do we need purification in purgatory when Jesus died on the cross for us

Honestly, what I always go to with these people is “you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

Now think. Does an evil group of masterminds controlling things for 1200-1500 years and murdering any “true” Christians match that verse? I’d say not. If the Catholic Church isn’t the true church then the gates of hell prevailed for at least 1500 years…

Tell him to read 1 Corinthians 3: 10-15. Paul speaks of our works being tested by fire.

Christ may have died for our sins, but we still separate ourselves from God when we sin. Jesus dying for us doesn’t mean our sins don’t still have consequences.

Look, whenever you respond to this guy, he’s just going to deflect or change the subject, so I wouldn’t waste too much time with him.

Well Rosie, I suggest you not post statements on Facebook you can’t defend.

Buy some Catholic apologetics books and read them. First and foremost Karl Keating’s Catholicism and Fundamentalism.

Don’t expect us to defend your Facebook postings for you, learn the facts by doing research.

I always share Catholic things on my Facebook I don’t post looking for an argument I’m a member on lots of Catholic groups so I always share things

Is he a fb friend or is your profile public? You do not have to respond and begin a fb thread that will be illinformed on one side and hard to defend on the other.

You can turn comments off and remove coments. You can also tweek privacy settings for eho posts to your wall.
