Okay, it’s bad enough that one of my friends blackmailed me to masturbate, which I didn’t, and he was convinced it was bad. (Finally!)

But then he’s also influencing me to watch hentai (anime porn)

His excuse was that you don’t lust over your “neighbor” since those anime characters are made-up. He also said that lust is a sin because you treat people like objects for their body parts (which is true), but then again those anime characters are made-up and he’s using that as an excuse.

Well, my only question would be what other parts of the teachings of the Church can be able to explain this?

What is the purpose of “hentai”? Is it intended for an artistic purpose? Is it designed for a lustful purpose? If it is designed for a lustful purpose, then it is a sin. It is made to lead people to sin. Just don’t watch it and tell your friend the same.

It seems that distorted explanations. Some people may get lust from the waves of the sea or from the sound of the wind. There are sex- distortions for all kinds and tastes.

As he said: it is an excuse. It would be better for him to accept things straight forward and not making making curves: you understand his intentions and everybody does.

I would not call andy teaching for his intentions are so clear for you and everybody…

Hentai was originally created because in Japan, actual pornography was illegal at the time (it still might be)…so people created animation that showed a story and a plot but was ultimately about the sex

I don’t believe personally that theres anything wrong with it…but then again i also don’t think theres anything wrong with Masturbation…so i guess we’re just going to disagree xD

Porn is porn, whether in cartoon form or “real”. It is a sin, grave in nature, and a mortal sin if you know it is a sin (which you now know) and you consent of your own will to commit it.

You are ultimately responsible for your own actions. Your friend cannot influence you to watch it, you can choose to watch or not watch.

Get a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and look up in the index the paragraphs that pertain to masturbation and sexuality and the offenses against the dignity of marriage, chasity, etc…

I’m glad to hear that things turned out OK on the blackmail issue and that your friend is now convinced that masturbation is bad. This will help immensely with this new issue.

Ask your friend what purpose there is for watching such things. What is gained from it?
Why does he watch it? Is he “turned on” by it? Does he then fantasize about it? How about the increased temptation to either masturbate (which he now agrees is bad) or to go out seeking a real partner for inappropriate sexual activity.

The bottom line in this is that either something is properly ordered toward Love, toward God and is healthful or it is NOT properly ordered toward God and Love and is therefore NOT healthful. So how does watching this animated porn move your friend closer to God? That’s the root question, and if the answer is that it does not, then one should avoid it.
It’s not a matter of being able to point to a specific rule - which only leads to “legalism”. It’s about ordering ones self toward God, and moving towards God in everything we think and do.

James

He says he does it to get “turned on”.
That would make it sinful. There is not a good reason to watch any form of pornography, and “because it turns him on” is definitely not a good reason. Getting “turned on” does not lead one to heaven

He says he does it to get “turned on”.
If he is deliberately doing this to get “turned on” then he is sinning by “lusting” after the character. (Mt 5:28)
Of course his argument will likely be that this is not a “woman” but a cartoon…But any movie, whether animated or live action is not “real” it’s just images that you are looking at. No matter how the image is generated, it is still a “woman” whether live action or animated.

Well even if one could argue that “technically” being aroused is not a sin, it certainly is a “near occasion” of sin because repeated, deliberate exposure to such stimulus, will in all likelihood, result in sin.

Bottom line is that this activity does nothing to build up the kingdom…

Peace
James
