Something I thought I'd never see on EWTN

Why ?
EWTN broadcasts LOTS of events like this. It’s right up their alley, so to speak. They are kind of a go-to network fro me when I want CATHOLIC programming…

My mother was very devoted to John XXIII. He called the council PRECISELY to keep up with the times…he saw an opportunity for the Church to have it’s beliefs broadcast to all the nations…not just via word of mouth or the printed page.

Another poster is correct about the misinterpretation of the Council. Anyone who has bothered to read the Documents know that they are truly inspired.
Implementation of some things (and some that were never even suggested) was the problem.

But we survived…and are now blessed with 2 new Saints!
Alleluia!

Yes, but judging by the fact he made no long-term housing provisions, his intention was to keep the council short. He already completed the Mass reforms Pius XII had begun.

His Veterum Sapientia and the 1962 Missal inter alia were milestones and it wasn’t until the Papacy of St. John Paul II (and Pope Emeritus Benedict) that that was realized.

Very nice. Thanks for the tip. It can be viewed in its entirety at youtube.com/watch?v=USY9q8VN13c

I know that many detest this edifice (mostly people who have never attended a liturgy there) and it’s certainly not my favorite from a design standpoint. However it is a superb place to take part in the Mass and other holy liturgies.

In some ways it’s like a Hollywood soundstage for the celebration of the Mass. Its acoustics, thundering and beautiful pipe organ, audio system, lighting, awesome view of the altar, baptistery and the way in which it facilitates processions do the celebration of the Mass great justice.

It’s nice to see that healing has taken place between the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and EWTN. Fr. Ed was the perfect person to lead this celebration.
Ooh, thanks for the video link! I’m glad the event is archived online.

I agree. Fr. Ed Benioff is awesome! I hope there’s more events like this in the future. 👍

There is a much more practical reason. Roger Cardinal Mahony and Mother Angelica/Deacon Bill Steltemeyer had a very strained relationship. Both the Archdiocese and EWTN now have new leadership in charge and one of the gifts seems to be that of healing.

The event celebrated Pope John Paul II and his historic papal visit to Los Angeles in 1987, with music, prayer and testimonials.
It was sponsored by the Archdiocesan Office of the New Evangelization.

Some photos from last night, taken from the LA Cathedral’s facebook page:

Gorgeous photos…

I figured that was what the OP was suggesting by the title of this thread. Thanks be to God for healing!

OK…I’ll repeat…what does Mahoney’s letter have to do with EWTN 's broadcast? He’s not in their Diocese. He didn’t like her. I don’t see what that has to do with her broadcasting.
Cardinal Mahoney doesn’t decide who goes on the air…

I stayed up and watched it until near the very end when they started with the trumpets. At that point I figured the mass was over and I could go to bed. I was terribly tired.

I think the mass started at around 1am Pacific Daylight Savings time, and lasted until 3 or 4 am or so. Ordinarily I’m not sleepy at those hours, but on that particular Sunday morning I certainly was, and I’m afraid I “watched” it with my eyelids closed for a good portion of the time.

I’ve thought about it since, and while I’d like to say I felt inspired, instead I was plagued with sort of ‘atheistic’ thoughts about the ‘this-worldliness’ of the affair. I’m not sure why, because at other times in my life I seem to have been closer to ‘worlds unseen’.

While I wish to somehow keep the faith and experience God’s love, of late it seems more certain to me than usual that either there isn’t anything after death, or if there is that I will be going to hell, although I have to say that for a brief time not long ago I had a breakthrough and did experience something like God’s love upon hearing of the death of somebody I admired. I have hopes that he made it to heaven even though he wasn’t a believer. He was a very kind and generous person.

For another view in its entirety (and it’s a bit longer), I believe this is the broadcast that was livestreamed via the Cathedral’s webcam stream.

I’d like a resolution to this question to keep the discussion here focused: just what is the explanation for the title of this thread?

Yes it is
Whether brutal or not the raison d’etre for it is to outlast the earth quakes. But I don’t think it is required. Up the road in San Francisco a gothic cathedral has been built, Grace Episcopal cathedral. It is built of site poured cement and is very seismic resistant. It would take very little adaptation for Catholic worship.

As referenced by those you quoted, there was a fracas between the leadership at EWTN and my previous bishop a number of years ago. Because of that incident, neither party were interested nor involved in broadcasting the many large, archdiocesan-sponsored Catholic events in Los Angeles. Thankfully, healing has taken place with new leadership of both parties.

Well, the previous cathedral in Los Angeles was constructed of masonry brick and had no steel reinforcement or a foundation. It was sitting on the ground in California, so you can imagine that some protection against earthquakes was necessary in the construction of the new cathedral.
