my bffs pastor writes a little something every week, sometimes it lifts up our spirits and other times just makes us think and appreciate all we have…Well today it’s one of those that makes you think…I want to share what he wrote:

"A Little Backward?

This is gonna be quick.

As we all gear up for our national day of Thanksgiving….I’ve got a couple of questions to ask:

Did God ever ask us to give thanks? Was Abraham Lincoln’s original declaration of a national day of Thanksgiving a good thing? Did God ever ask us anywhere in the Bible to have an annual celebration of the birth of Jesus? Then why do we spend one day thanking God (like He asked us to) and the next 28 days preparing for something He never asked us to do?

Do we have it a little backward?

Just a thought!

He’s not my pastor, he’s a friend of mine’s pastor, but I get to receive some items he preaches and writes about that sometimes inspire you and other times guides you and on occassions make you think…and this is one of them…

I suppose accordingly Christmas was never asked for in the Bible by Jesus or GOD …
So perhaps he is specifying that Christmas shouldn’t really be celebrated…

One of my best friends in the whole world is a Jehovah Witness. (please don’t comment on that religion) Most folks don’t know much aobut that religion and it’s a lot different than what most people have heard about it.

JWs are very strict followers of the Bible. They study it very very closely. The reason they don’t celebrate Christmas is for two reasons, one, like that pastor said, the Bible never says to celebrate it. And two, because the date we celebrate Christmas is technically the wrong day. Jesus’ real birth happened in the fall or something like that. They do have a special service for the resurection but that’s not during our Easter, it’s when they have figured out when it actually happened. Anyway, just thought I’d throw thatin there for some unknown reason.

lol…I had a few friends that are JW as well and yes they are very strict when they would come over and start with my father against whose religion was better, for some strange reason they believe theirs is-to each his own- and my father like a strict Catholic would defend his religion as well, and it would never end pretty! lol

But they too would always ask us when we would wish them a Merry Christmas or something you know, they would be like WHAT? So yeah…interesting…

I take it to mean we should be thankful everyday not just on a legislated day. Same thing with Christmas we should be grateful everyday. Same thing with Valentines day. Do we really need a secularly declared day to tell us how we Christians should be acting everyday.

Yes it’s food for thought. And action.

What about John 6 are you referring to? The fact that Jesus fed everyone and no one was hungry? Or that he walked on water? Or that the deciples left him? etc? Which part of John 6 are you talking about? I’ll be glad to ask her. She is very knowledgable about it.

John Chapter 6 verses 51-58. In this chapter Jesus was preparing us for the Eucharist the true presence which is a gift he left us. This the miracle of transubstantiation occurs every time on the altar when the priest says the Eucharistic prayers during Holy Mass.

Dear Mr. iluvmybabies’ bffs Pastor,

In your recent note you asked a couple of questions I’d like to answer. Yes God asks us to give thanks. Abraham Lincoln’s declaration of Thanksgiving was a very good thing. However, it was not the original declaration; that came from President Geo. Washington. Please do some homework before spamming your flock with your Chick-Soup-For-the-Soul moments.

There is no record in Sacred Scripture that the holiday now generally known as Christmas was mandated by God. But then again He never tells us to eat egg rolls either, and I’ve seen you with cabbage on your chin. So, having egg rolls or celebrating Christmas isn’t intrinsically a violation of Scripture, now is it?

Now that the pleasantries are over with, I’d really like to ask you about this question:

Are you suggesting that those under your direct spiritual care are thankless fools devoted to only the pursuit of Christmas gift shopping? Is that the opinion you have of your congregation? I am shocked that I or my family would have contributed to this view point that you have of us and the rest of the faithful here. What makes you think we only give thanks to God when we gather around the great stuffed turkey in November? You know the more I think about this the more peeved I’m becoming. Since you’ve sent this out to the whole congregation, I think it would be best to address your apparent lack of vision and poor attitude towards us in a general and open meeting. I suggest Wednesday next in the Church Hall at 7:30pm. I know I’ll be there, will you?
