you mean there is more to the Christian faith than what is in the bible!? heh. just kidding…
yeah, i wrote him back saying how the apostles were the first central authority of the only Church Christ had founded, with Peter being the head, and apostolic succession through out the past 2000 years but he hasn’t responded. i’ve mentioned how if Christ gave Peter authority, Peters authority could be passed down and i also didn’t think Christ would have just left us without something to guide us in truth. with that he will probably write back talking about how we have the holy spirit to guide us in truth. knowing this, i already told him that i believe in one universal church with one teaching which can only be found in our Catholic Church and not the various 30,000+ churches with 30,000+ different teachings. ending i finally asked him where he got his authority from since apparently the Pope can’t have authority.
btw, last weeks newsletter that he sent had to with why his Church didn’t have a kitchen or fellowship hall… wanna know why? because it’s not in the bible!

I know I posted this in another thread, but this is what I always come back to…

If the BIBLE is the sole rule of faith and all we have to do is read it to know what we should believe… then WHY do Protestants have Bible study? What’s to study? It’s there in black and white, right? And who’s to say who leads the study? I’ve heard a lot of non-Catholics say, “Well, the Bible says (fill in the blank)… now my pastor says this means (fill in the blank)…” Hello! Why is okay for THEIR church leader to interpret Scripture for them? What happens if they don’t agree with that interpretation? (yes, I know… new church!)

BTW… does your friend drive a car? Why? Ask him to show you where the Bible says he can drive or own a car. Does he wear a tie? Is his Bible bound in black leather or red leather? Does his church have electric lights, door knobs, tile floors? Hmmm…

well, he finally responded and he didn’t say anything about the Pope having authority, so i assume i proved my point, but he did say something about Peter recieving the keys to the kingdom of Heaven…

**Mt.18:18 shows that Peter was not the only one who received the keys to the kingdom. A correct translation of the verbs in both Mt.16:18 and Mt.18:18 shows that the apostles only had the authority to what had already been bound - they are not the author of salvation, Jesus is:
(Matthew 16:19 NASB)

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” ** anyone know about this? it doesn’t say that in my bible.

when asked about where he get’s his authority:** I don’t have any authority other than the word of God (Titus 2:15)**

oh and when i asked “What is the sole final authority in Christianity? The bible or the church elders?” The Bible (2 John 9)

That is not stated in 2 John 9. What is he doing?? Point him here: 1 Timothy 3:15
