I cant get over how childish the labels people tag themselves with around here. For example ‘‘Orthodox in communion with rome’’ in their religious status. Why cant people just have Christian or Catholic in their status and just be done with it? :(

Or is there something I am ignorant of? am I reading it all and taking it up the wrong way?

That particular label just emphasizes the view of certain ECs that their faith is essentially identical to that of their counterpart Orthodox church, with the exception of the fact that they are in communion with Rome rather than Constantinople or Alexandria or what have you.

Faith is a very personal thing for all of us, and I can understand if people wish to differentiate themselves or introduce some uniqueness into this field. Thankfully it is not just a short menu of choices, it is a freeform text box.

I have often wished to classify myself as a “Latin-Rite Catholic with an affinity for the Byzantines” but I personally do not feel like standing out in a crowd. I purposely omit “Roman” from my religion for the very reason that I have had experience with the Byzantine Rite and I embrace some aspects of Eastern theology and liturgy in my personal practice.

Why must everyone conform to your views? If I wish to tag myself as Orthodox in Communion with Rome…what business is that of yours?

I think its very childish for people to call themselves just catholic…and not Roman Catholic…or Coptic Catholic…or whatever Catholic…and remember if your not Catholic or Orthodox you have no business calling yourself a Christian. 😃

So there! 😉

I totally get that. I seem to identify myself as a Catholic with Eastern affinities as well.

Blessings.

I have come across MANY excellent Christians who are not Catholic or Orthodox (in communion with whomever).

So there!

Me too!! I once heard someone say, “Many roads can lead to Rome”

I bet Satan is having a field day with us not being very charitable with eachother and spending energy on what in the big scheme of things, really is not something we should invest much of our time in.

Blessings.

ever heard of sarcasm? 😃

I know Alex has! 😛

I’m not sure I understand why ‘Orthodox in communion with Rome’ is childish?

Care to elaborate?

That said, I am a newly minted Catholic! AND EXCITED! SO I want to share it with the world. 🙂 Sorry, if that’s childish of me then so be it!

I’m just the opposite. I like it when someone puts all their cards on the table.

Me too! I think it’s helpful when people are a little more specific about what they are so you can understand where they’re coming from when reading their posts.

I think “Christian” is too general (after all, several non-Christian cults identify themselves as “Christian”). There are too many denominations that teach very different things and you don’t know how to answer someone if they’re “Christian” because you can’t tell what they believe.

When I see “Catholic” I usually assume Roman Catholic (Latin Rite) because that’s what most self-identified Catholics are where I’m from, but some people are from other Catholic traditions/rites, so I think it’s good to be specific sometimes.

Now that you mention it, maybe all my cards ain’t on the table. I’ll fix it now.

Pope John Paul11 once said that we have to learn to breathe with both lungs of the Church, the Latin and the eastern rite and i am glad that there people on this forum form both lungs because we are all part of the Holy Catholic Church.

I think it helpful when replying to posters on this forum actually when these descriptions are used.

ITA. It’s helpful for me to get an idea of where people are coming from when I assess their responses. And, I think the more descriptive tags offer more insight into an individual’s mindset/priorities more than the general “Christian” does. IMHO.

Personally, I loved it when Michael and Andrew and perhaps others began to identify themselves as Orthodox in Communion with other Orthodox. It still makes me grin.
I think it’s interesting to see what people come up with.
