I don’t think it was imitation. They were all bowing and genuflecting when passing it. They wouldn’t do that if it was imitation.

IMHO, the Most Blessed Sacrament ought to be kept “front and center” on the altar and in no lesser position. Great video; it did make me smile.

I love it! 
Love of the Lord and realizing who it is one worships should be of the finest and best taste. The before and after of that altar table shows what happens when the mind is bereft of the more sublime touches of the Holy Spirit. God bless those guys

But why was it necessary to put a tabernacle on an altar that (presumably) they were just using temporarily to start with?

I assume because its customary to have the Tabernacle dead center on a high altar.
Also that parish now is operated by the FSSP. Ill try to find a name.

1183 The tabernacle is to be situated “in churches in a most worthy place with the greatest honor.”[61] The dignity, placing, and security of the Eucharistic tabernacle should foster adoration before the Lord really present in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar.[62]
The sacred chrism (myron), used in anointings as the sacramental sign of the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit, is traditionally reserved and venerated in a secure place in the sanctuary. The oil of catechumens and the oil of the sick may also be placed there.
since the other masses have the priest face the congregation while doing the canon of the mass, the tabernacle doesnt necessarily have to be in the center so long as everyone can see it.
however, it only makes sense with a tridentine mass to have the tabernacle in the middle of the altar directly under the crucifix. it is and should be the center of attention and the most convenient place for the priest.
