It has happened in our parish that an EMHC has picked-up a dropped Host, and placed it “loose” in the tabernacle with the intent of informing the priest or deacon after Mass, so that it can reverently be dealt with since it could not be distributed. From your “15 minutes” comment, something like this may be the case in what you saw. It’s not clear to me that the reverent consumption of a “spoiled” consecrated Host in circumstances such as this is the same as, or violates the norms governing, self-communion.
