My 7 year old son got a scapular for Christmas, I explained about it a bit. So of course he said a hail Mary and then took it off, I explained he should always wear it and he would get used to having it on. Needless to say he wanted none of it. Any ideas or anyone that has children that refuse to wear their scapular?

BTW Christ is born! Hallelujah!

He’s 7.

If he doesn’t want to wear it, put it away. A scapular is a personal devotion and at that age it may not be something he is interested in.

I wouldn’t worry too much. He’s a 7 year old boy, he probably associates necklaces with girls and women and doesn’t want to wear it because of that. I wouldn’t push it - instead put it in a special little box or something for him in his room, and when he grows up he can go “wow that’s from when I was a kid! Sure means a lot to me now!”

Wearing a scapular is only a part of the devotion which includes daily prayers. Without the prayers it is only on outward symbol and reminder.

Then don’t force him to wear it.
He may change his mind when he is old enough to understand the devotion, but then again, it may not be his thing. It’s not mandatory and is not magic.
Let it go.

Yea I only talked with him about it when he he first got it, haven’t mentioned it since. I’ll just keep it on top of his dresser if he decides to wear it then I’ll be happy. But he is young still, just didn’t know if anyone had similar problems is all. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut everyone. God bless.

Most 7-year-olds I know have many texture issues. At 7 there is NO way I would have tolerated an itchy wiggly scapular around my neck. Heck, I can’t do it now. There’s a reason that most of the major shirt makers are going “tagless”…most people do not do well with that type of clothing.

Let him not wear it. It’s not a big deal. It’s a particular devotion he, at that age, has no ability to understand anyway. If you’re viewing the thing in terms of “Okay I need to die with this thing on to guarentee myself Heaven” then you’re actually indulging in superstition which is sinful. No sacramental should be treated as if it were some pagan charm.
