I’m Irish I would never forgive my son if he professed a protestant religion. I would make it clear to my wife and my son the hurt it would cause me. No you absolutely can’t be Catholic and Methodist.
So, which is the pagan religion? Methodist who are chrisitans, or Catholic who are christians? If one can not belong to two christian churches at the same time, and by doing so, one is “serving two masters” then which is the front “church” for satan?

🤷

My 12 year old son was born to two cradle Catholics, baptized in a Catholic Church and attends Catholic school. About 3 years ago, mother decided to join Methodist church, and insists on having our son attend church with her 1x per month. She tells our son he is Catholic and Methodist, I have told my son he cannot be Catholic and another religion. It is correct to say he attends two churches, but he is only of the Catholic faith. My son prefers the Catholic Church.
Am I correct in telling my son he cannot be Catholic and another religion? Will he have to make a decision when it comes time for the sacrament of Confirmation?
Thanks for any help and guidance.
Well the best advice I can give you is to reconcile your family. Assuming that your still together with Mom, you need to work on bringing her back to the church. Otherwise it’ll be trouble and that you already know. If you are seperated/divorced, then it becomes a lot tougher to deal with. I would say that you are correct to tell him you cannot be both Methodist and Catholic. Yes, he will have to make a decision when it comes time for his confirmation. I always kind of viewed Catholic Confirmation similar to Protestant Baptism. Both are to be freely choosen. Your in a pickle. Good Luck!

The answer to that question would obviously be any Protestant ecclesial community as their “doctrine” rejects everything that Jesus Christ established. What they don’t reject they distort. Not necessarily the fault of the followers, but the doctrine is nevertheless corrupt and not pleasing to God.

You, your son, and even Mom are in a hard place. Here’s a recommendation if you don’t mind. Compromise with Mom and work out the schedules so that you and your son, and your wife (presumption the marriage is still intact) attend Mass together and the Methodist service together. You and your son partake of the Eucharsit at Mass…Mom partakes of communion with the Methodists…the family prays together and stays together…your son sees himself in your light…a CATHOLIC who loves and supports Mom by attending the Methodist service with her…and he sees Mom as loving and supporting by attending mass.

I’ve seen this done before in mixed marriages and it’s a good arrangement as long as boundaries are set and it’s not some wierdo religion like JW or something. A chaplain friend of mine who is Methodist attends mass with his wife every Sunday…and then she attends the service that he leads.

As long as you’re meeting your Sunday obligation there is no harm in attending a protestant worship service…and if it’s a good preacher…the extra sermon can’t hurt either.

Sober recommendations.

Then you dont deserve forgiveness yourself.
Maybe true but I’ll let God judge me for that, Lord knows it won’t be my only sin I’ll go to the grave with. Would God expect a Jewish father to forgive his son if one day he came home and told his Dad he was becoming a nazi?

Protestants in Ireland killed over 2 million Irish during the 1800s and countless other millions since the years after the reformation, so the comparison isn’t nearly as shocking as you think. During the great famine England exported enough beef, barley, sheep, and other staples to feed the entire Irish population for a decade. It would be like the USA exporting cattle and grain from Darfur while the people literally died where they laid and wasted away from starvation or disease. Don’t forget these starving dying people were also required to pay 10% tithe to the Anglican Church during the famine, a Church they despised or they had their homes razed to the ground by absentee landlords (who profited greatly by the killing off of the Irish, turning tenant farms into grazing pastures was more profitable)…

It goes on to this day, I have family who have been killed in the troubles, half my family is in Ireland still, half were forced to emigrate during the 1860’s and later the 1920’s.

🤷 Didn’t see any reference to pagan in the OP.

English and Swedish might be both Germanic languages, but if you’re going to Sweden, I’d bring a phrase book.

You CAN’T believe that the eucharist is REALLY CHRIST and at the same time believe its JUST A SYMBOL. Hence confusion. And hence the one communion requires its members to hold the fomer, and the other that latter, you can’t be both. Unless you believe in schizophrenia.

Very good suggestion 🙂

something to think about, the child will likely reject both churches later if the bickering continues. Isnt the boys relationship with God more important than that church his parent wants him to attend. God will sort him out where He wants the boy to go to.

If both parents love him they will go to both, or find a comprimse which doesnt put down the other church. Otherwise one will be left with hard feelings like Lukewarm. Those hurt and divide.

And like it or not in all cases the divorce, the different churches, the troubles, protestant vrs catholic, any and all of it. And I probably get flamed, sorry but I didnt say it.

Seventy times seven. Just what do we think Jesus died for?? for us to argue or see another way. To let go. 🙂

Hey, your stance is much like the Jewish stance… Jews sit shiva and mourn when a child accepts another belief.

Respectfully, what do you know about what John Wesley taught? Have you read his sermons? Have you read his writings?

As a Protestant Bible teacher and church leader turning Catholic, I have been astonished at how LITTLE the Protestants know Catholic teaching. The Protestants will talk their mouths off all day long about what Catholics teach and believe – but they’re wrong. It’s all wrong. It’s all a lie. They don’t know squat about Catholicism.

Respectfully, I assert that Catholics often do the same thing back the other way. Catholics, as a group, don’t know what Protestants actually teach and believe either. They unwittingly spread lies about Protestants too.

Respectfully, I couldn’t care less as to what he taught. I don’t have the time to study the teachings of those who mock and distort the Truth; the most harmful lie is the lie that is mixed with Truth. Catholics today say that we should learn what the other religions teach so that we can counter it appropriately…well, that’s one opinion. If you knows the Truth, study it, and keep up your spiritual life with the Lord, why waste time studying something that offends God. This is for Catholics; for those searching, obviously the rules are a little different.
As a Catholic, to attend Mass AND a Protestant service would be setting the same example as telling his son “homosexuality is abominable before the Lord, but we’re going to attend the wedding of ‘Aunt Bob’ and Uncle Steve.” (Note to all: this is not to start homosexual debate! I’m just making a comparison.) It’s going to send mixed messages and his son would be more likely to end up leaving the “pillar and foundation of truth” because another “church” *feels *good.

That’s absolute unadulterated garbage.

No, it isn’t. The message is worse than mixed. The boy is being taught the sin of indifferentism. One faith is as good as another. Catholicism possesses the fullness of Truth. Protestantism does not.

or he will see religion divides and reject church and God with it cause the whole thing hurts too much.

It is garbage. He’s equating Protestant faiths with sexual abomination. When I first started posting here there as a thread which essentially asked whether you would prefere that your kid become an atheist or Protestant and there were plenty of Catholics who chose the former. Nonesense.

No it wasn’t I don’t know how you deduced that from reading that post, they didn’t say any such thing in that post.

But obviously you don’t know what he taught, so you don’t know that he mocked or distorted the truth.
the most harmful lie is the lie that is mixed with Truth.
But the only non-harmful way of countering such a lie is to distinguish carefully between the lie and the truth mixed with it.
Catholics today say that we should learn what the other religions teach so that we can counter it appropriately…well, that’s one opinion.
It’s the only reasonable one if you want to “counter it” (and, of course, this is not the only reason Catholics might study non-Catholic writings–they might also want to learn from them). If you want to leave non-Catholics alone, then by all means don’t bother learning about us.
If you knows the Truth, study it, and keep up your spiritual life with the Lord, why waste time studying something that offends God.
First of all, many of the things Protestants believe do not offend God (by Catholic standards). In the second place, no one says you should study Protestantism. But since you clearly know nothing about it, why are you posting on a thread discussing it?

It’s a very bad comparison–your Church does not as far as I know teach that a Protestant service is equivalent to homosexuality. Typically, a Methodist service will include hymns and prayers to one or more persons of the Blessed Trinity, very probably a recitation of the Apostles’ Creed, and a sermon that (like most Catholic sermons) is more likely to be bland than heretical. Once a month or so there will be communion, and only there do problems arise, it seems to me.
It’s going to send mixed messages and his son would be more likely to end up leaving the “pillar and foundation of truth” because another “church” *feels *good.
Or he might leave because he has been told that something he experiences to be good is evil. Telling a child that singing praise to God is bad is truly going to be confusing, especially when his mother says otherwise.

I

No, he has to decide now. I’m assuming at his age he is communing at the Latin church now. If we wants to do that the other 3x month, he has to decide NOW. He can always change his decision later.
That’s fair. However, the Eucharist generally matters less to Methodists than it does to Catholics (alas), and is certainly celebrated less often. If he doesn’t go with his mother on the first Sunday of the month, he will probably never have an occasion to receive communion in the Methodist church.

Edwin

A Catholic has no business studying any protestant writings, everything we need for salvation is contained in the Bible and the Magesterium of the Church. We have the great Saints of Christian history and somehow I need Billy Graham, Rick Warren and Joel Osteen?

To the OP, you are to be the head of your household get control of your sons spiritual life, lead him by example and let it be known to your wife that she agreed to raise him Catholic and this nonsense of dragging him to a heretical Church has to stop.
