I know many catholic scholars teach that the songs of songs is a metaphor for the love of God for his people. Its also been considered, especially by fundamentalists and evangelical christians, to be a literal description of how romantic love is supposed to function between two christians, or jews I guess. Can someone clarify? Could it have both meanings simultaneously?

From what I see on TV, certain faiths like pushing the Israeli / Palestinian conflict toward the end of the world.

Apparently, human intervenion precipitates action on Jesus’ part.

It could have both meanings, but the Catholic Church does not set such a high bar for romantic love within marraige. Catholic marraiges can be valid and good even without much romantic love. The reality is, after a certain age, there ain’t much skipping among the rocks like a mountain goat. A wife need not think her husband strong, and he need not think her beautiful. But they need to think their covenant with each other a divinely ordained sacrament.

I haven’t done much study of the Song of Songs specifically, but the Church speaks of the four senses of Scripture (CCC 115-119).

So, yes, Scripture passages can (and usually do) have more than one meaning simultaneously.

interesting and noteworthy, but not directly relevent to this specific thread.

on the literal/figurative level of meaning, the Song of Songs is about the impending marriage between king Solomon and a woman referred to as a Sulamitess.

on the spiritual level of meaning, the Song of Songs is about the marriage of Christ and His Bride the Church.
